JAPANESE
As part of the Australian Curriculum it is a requirement that all year 7 and year 8 students are given the opportunity to study a language and at Calwell High School we offer Japanese. Our language programs are designed to cater for both beginners and students with previous experience. Students explore the Japanese language as they are immersed in Japanese culture, arts, food and media.
All classes are differentiated for the range in abilities, allowing all students to develop their skills no matter what stage of the language they are at. The languages program has been expanded to include a senior languages elective for years 9 and 10 for students who wish to continue their study of Japanese.
JAPANESE CULTURE
In addition to the language program, Calwell High School offers an opportunity for Year 8 students to explore Japanese culture in greater depth through the Japanese Culture class. This class is designed for students who wish to focus more on the cultural aspects of Japan, providing them with the option to study the language and explore culture throughout the semester.
Students will delve into Japanese food and the etiquette surrounding mealtimes, learning about the significance of different dishes and the customs that shape dining experiences in Japan. They will also explore Japan’s vibrant festivals and events, gaining insight into the traditions, celebrations, and rituals that define the country's cultural identity.
As part of the course, students are also encouraged to select a topic they are passionate about, related to Japan, and complete a research project, further fostering their curiosity and personal connection to Japanese culture.
SENIOR JAPANESE
Students who wish to extend their knowledge and skills of Japanese in Years 9 and 10 can elect to study our Senior Japanese program. The Senior Japanese course offers students the chance to explore life in Japan whilst building their knowledge of the language. Students can expect to learn about school life in Japan; impacts of manga, film, and tv; fashion and traditions; and what working life as a adult is like.
JAPANESE SUPPORT
Support is offered at various times throughout a lesson to all students. Focused feedback on pronunciation, writing, and cultural understanding is given to all students. In addition to the ongoing support offered by the classroom teacher we also offer Japanese help drop-in sessions during FLT. Teachers will be available at these times to assist students with their studies.
