WHAT'S HAPPENING?
WEEK 9

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

We have had a great Week 9, finishing off our last week of formal classes. A real highlight was the Year 10 Graduation Ceremony that was attended by so many special guests, including the Minister for Education, Yvette Berry and the Deputy Director General, Jane Simmons.

They were extremely impressed with the graduation ceremony, which involved some outstanding student performances and some heartfelt speeches, especially from Year Coordinators Matt Bradley and Nicole Tamalemai. It was a great reminder of just how attached staff can become to a student cohort and the positive impact students have on the lives of teachers.

I also enjoyed our final P&C Meeting for the Year with a celebratory dinner at the Southern Cross Club in Tuggeranong. It was testament to the strength of connection amongst our P&C and I encourage everyone to consider getting along to meetings in the New Year. It really is a great partnership, and very social at times!

Next Week we look forward to our Year Awards Assemblies on Monday, followed by Activities Week.

We have been contacted by a number of families concerned about the increase incidents of Covid in the community, and its possible impact on the Christmas period. Please be reminded that if students are feeling unwell or symptomatic, they are required to stay home. We want to make sure everyone is able to experience a happy and healthy holiday!

Have a great weekend.

Steve

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

CLIMATE CHOICES SCHOOLS AWARDS
Last week, our Leadership and Service Students attended the Climate Choices Schools Awards, an initiative of the ACT Government. Here they are looking awesome – as usual – with Minister Yvette Berry.

We were honoured to receive a Highly Commended Award in the Sustainable Leadership Secondary School category. Thank you to all the students who participated in the Leadership and Service program – this Award is for every one of you.

Isaak Brown also received a Highly Commended Award in the Sustainable Leadership Student category, in recognition of his fabulous work supporting the environment and conservation this year.

Congratulations to all the award winners. You can read more about the Sustainable Schools Program here: www.climatechoices.act.gov.au/policy-programs/sustainable-schools-program
ACADEMY FOR ENTERPRISING GIRLS PROGRAM
On Monday 4 December, 17 of our Year 7 & 8 students participated in the National Young Change Agents Discovery Program.  They gained skills in enterprising and creative thinking to solve problems in innovative new ways.

Each of the girls pitched their social enterprise idea to the group. They had fantastic ideas from revitalising local parks for young people, increase the opportunities for the year group to build better friendship connections, ways of improving the offerings at our canteen, creating a bigger book community and even developing an App to enable students to better communicate with their teachers and the school. Well done girls!
THE MULTIPLEX JUMP START PROGRAM
Congratulations to Talia for successfully completing the The Multiplex Jump Start Program.

This is a 12-month commitment that includes discipline-based workshops, industry events and site walks designed to give female high-school students a holistic view of the construction industry and the diverse range of career pathways it has to offer.  Talia completed this program at the new Canberra Hospital expansion, which she said was a very exciting opportunity.

FACULTY UPDATES

PHOTOGRAPHY
Julia Clothier organised the Year 9/10 Photography class to go on an excursion to the National Botanic Gardens in Acton to take photographs. The students were well behaved and really enjoyed being outside taking photographs.

The students were able to purchase food from the Café and enjoyed eating outside in the sunshine. The following lesson the students presented their photographs to the class. Fun was had by all, including our bus driver the lovely Laura DeCosta.
FOOD TECHNOLOGY
The Year 7 Food Technology class finished their practical classes this term with a week of holiday baking and decorating. On Monday they baked cakes, biscuits and gingerbread and then decorated them on Wednesday. It was a fun way to end the term!

P&C NEWS

Hello parents, carers and friends

I’m writing this on International Volunteer Day, 5 December 2023, and I’d like to share with you the message that has come via Volunteering Australia:

The International Volunteer Day 2023 Theme is: “If Everyone Did”

“If everyone volunteered, the world would be a better place. Imagine more than eight billion of us volunteering. Limitless possibilities for sustainable development – food and education for everyone, clean environment and good health, inclusive and peaceful societies, and more.” To read more, have a look at the United Nations Volunteering website at https://www.unv.org/

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered with Calwell High P&C throughout 2023. Next year promises many more opportunities to support the school through our P&C projects, and we value your assistance as we go forward.

Also please remember, when you’re dining out during the upcoming holiday period, to support our school through the Canberra Southern Cross Club Community Rewards Program and through Grill’d Woden Local Matters program. Now is also a good time to consider our excellent arrangement with The Athlete’s Foot School Rewards Program if you’re buying shoes for school. All these programs above help to spread the positive message about Calwell High to the broader community as well as assisting in the P&C’s fundraising initiatives that support our school.

Thank you to Business Manager Helen Williams and her team for helping to promote these opportunities through the school’s social media platforms.

COMMUNITY NOTICES

GIVE A TREE A DRINK
Have you noticed your neighbourhood street trees recently? Are they thirsty? This summer is going to be hot and dry. We encourage all school students to help protect our urban forest and make our city a great place to live by regularly watering their street trees. Water saving tip: take a bucket in the shower with you, and use the excess, to water the base of a street tree at least once a week. Canberra’s incredible trees provides much needed shade, clean our air and provides habitats for local wildlife. Help us protect trees so they can protect us.

The ACT Government has almost 60,000 young trees on the current watering program. While young street trees are watered by the ACT Government regularly to ensure their establishment and survival, the community can help by giving their local trees a drink over summer. For more information about caring for our public trees, read City Services Trees and Nature.
