WEEK 8

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

What a great week! Week 8 was largely dedicated to our Year 10s and making sure they received the celebratory send off they deserved. This included a fantastic breakfast and farewell assembly on Wednesday morning, where students and staff from across the school contributed to an incredibly entertaining, funny, and sometimes teary range of activities.

We then turned our attention to the Formal on Thursday night at the Southern Cross Club in Woden. Students and staff alike were dressed in their finest selections of suits and dresses and we were tested to an amazing evening of fine food and music. The dance floor was packed and dominated by Mr Rodriguez! A huge thank you to our Year 10 Coordinator, Mr Bradley, for his outstanding care and organisation of these events.

Congratulations to the Calwell High School P&C, being recognised at a presentation last night with the Federal Member for Bean, David Smith MP. It was further recognition of their amazing work in supporting this great community and the promotion of our great school. Thanks again to our P&C President, Geoff Puleston, for his tireless work and positivity.

A friendly reminder that Covid is increasing its presence in the community and we ask that anyone experiencing and cold and flu like symptoms remain at home until the symptoms have passed.

Have a great weekend.

Steve

FACULTY UPDATES

FOOD TECHNOLOGY
This week, Year 7 Food Technology completed their major assessment task for the term. They were tasked with designing their own pasta sauce and needed to write and then prepare their self designed recipe. The students had lots of fun and some fantastic dishes were produced.
DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
In Graphic Design, students are finishing off their music album covers, and working on their Magazine Spreads. It has been a highly productive semester with fantastic work produced.

In Digital Art, the Year 9s have been finishing off their interrupted walk cycle assignment, bringing their characters to life with wonderful animations. The year 10s had their final class on Tuesday, with some of them still creating works of art despite their grades having been finalised.
SCIENCE
Year 8 students are learning how to use displacement reactions in day-to-day life. Students followed all safety measures and demonstrated great involvement and teamwork.
WOOD AND METAL TECHNOLOGY
In Wood and Metalwork, students across different grades are showcasing their skills in practical projects. Year 8 Woodwork students have created Mirror Shelves and Jewellery Boxes, while Year 9 and 10 have focused on crafting stylish Coffee Tables. Year 8 Flex students are deeply engaged in constructing Chess Boards.

In Metalwork, Year 8 students have been mastering precision with Junior Hack Saws and Candle Holders. Year 9 Metalwork students are on the brink of completing Cantilever Tool Boxes, demonstrating their growing proficiency in metal craftsmanship. These projects not only highlight our students' dedication but also prepare them for success in the fields of wood and metal craftsmanship.

CONNECTION CLUBS

COFFEE CLUB
Our Year 10 coffee club students completed their final café service this week. They created a fun and relaxed café environment and staff are thankful for the opportunity they have provided to get their needed caffeine fix. The students will be greatly missed for the remaining weeks of term.

P&C NEWS

Hello parents, carers and friends

School shoes – great news!
The P&C has brokered a fundraising opportunity with The Athlete’s Foot, whose locally owned stores at the Canberra Centre, Tuggeranong and Woden have been giving back to local school communities for 16 years. They have invited Calwell High School to join their School Rewards Program.

$5 from every school shoe sold at any of these three stores, and linked to Calwell High School, will be donated back to the school in the form of either a cheque or $25 gift vouchers that the school can distribute at their own discretion. A brochure has been produced for Calwell High School showing shoe varieties - see below

The brochure shows the 2024 year but is valid for purchases from now onwards. You can also pick up a printed copy at any of the three stores. We’re also arranging for some printed copies to be available at the school front office and will let you know when these arrive.
Trivia Night – great fun!
The P&C Trivia Night at Grill’d Woden last week was a great success. Twenty-nine family members and staff enjoyed an excellent evening with a meal and a lot of fun. Nothing like a trivia night to have a nice time amongst friends, test your brain and have a good laugh! We’re planning more of these events next year so please stay tuned.

SCHOOL NOTICES

NEW LEARNER DRIVER FIRST AID PROGRAM
Are you, or someone you know, learning to drive in the ACT? A new program is now available that allows learner drivers to obtain basic lifesaving first aid skills and claim five hours credit toward their required driving hours. To be eligible, you must have held your ACT learner licence for at least three months before completing one of the approved courses.

We know the first people on scene of a collision are often other drivers. Ensuring you have a basic understanding of first aid could make a big difference to those involved in a crash. Visit Road Safety to find out more about this new program including other approved courses available.

YWCA CANBERRA CLUBHOUSE WITH FRIENDS
YWCA Canberra Clubhouse will be expanding our program to include a new program running Thursdays from 3.00pm to 6.00pm in Term 1. This program is run in partnership with The With Friends Initiative (TWFI) and is designed specifically for neuro-divergent young people primarily between the ages of 12 to 25 seeking social connection.

The way Clubhouse operates is that until 5.00pm participants are involved in structured STEAMM (Sciences, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics and Music) related activities and from 5-6pm they will have free time to explore the various resources our youth centre has, from VR headsets, a music/recording studio with a variety of instruments, photoshop, videography, 3-D printing, coding, T-shirt printing, jewellery making, badge making etc.

The first four weeks, the structured activities planned are designed to give participants the opportunity to explore what the club house has on offer and from week five onwards participants will be encouraged to develop a passion project which they will work on over the following few weeks and present back to the group at the end of the term.

There will be YWCA Youth workers on hand as well as mentors from the With Friends Initiative each session and the group size will be restricted (maximum of 10).
