FACULTY UPDATES

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Years 7 & 8
Our Junior H&PE classes have just completed their Term 4 health unit, Respectful Relationships, and are keen to get back into practical activities. In Health, students identified and explored influences on relationships, examined the components of positive relationships as well as unhealthy and harmful relationships, and developed skills for effective and assertive communication.

Students demonstrated their knowledge through class work, group discussions and responding to scenarios in their final assessment piece. As we move back to PE, students will have the opportunity to revisit previous sporting units, as well as fitness tasks and class challenges to finish off the year.

Years 9 & 10
Our Senior H&PE classes have wrapped up their Term 4 Health unit, Fit Communities part 2. This unit saw our students learn about the different components of fitness, examples include Speed, Agility, Muscular Endurance, Coordination to name a few.

There were, both, theory and practical elements to this health unit which took classes outdoors for a lesson to perform a variety of fitness drills focussed around all of the components of fitness to better understand which exercises are best used to develop each component.

For their assessment task, students were required to select one component and design a fitness session/PE lesson focussing on drills and exercises that will improve their chosen component. As the assessment was not required to actually be delivered, it gave students full scope to choose how they run a session as this gave them the opportunity to develop a plan that could use any equipment, location, or exercises they wish.

Human Movement
Human Movement has been coming off a high that was the Tough Mudder 5k Obstacle Course. With many students making sure to mention that we need to do the 10k next year!

In class, we have been focussing on functional movement. Understanding the importance of how the body can move most efficiently to prevent potential avenues for injury later in life. We have also been completing a few different exercises in the gym, allowing students to get a feel for what a mainstream gym may be like in the future.

With the Year 10s getting closer to the final days at Calwell, our theory for functional movement is wrapping up, so students have been diligently working on their final assignment during the last few lessons.

Outdoor Education
Outdoor Education has been firing on all cylinders with a surf camp having gone out last week and another having just returned. We started out by arriving at camp and setting up so that when we returned tired and hungry from our surfing session things would just be easy.

Little did I know how tired and hungry we would be! We were in the water for four hours straight! We got clean and dry, cooked our dinner and headed off to the beach for some evening activities.

Friday morning involved getting up with the sun and heading straight to the beach for a dawn surf. After another fantastic two hour session in the water, we headed back for a slow breakfast and packed up. Our students were perfect ambassadors for Calwell High, being polite, respectful and inclusive. What a wonderful group of young people!
SCIENCE
Year 8 science students performed STEM based experiments to test good and bad conductors of electricity as well as to determine which were most conductive among the given sample of metals.

Students also learned the working mechanism of a voltage rectifier which converts alternating current (AC) into the direct current (DC). Students demonstrated great discipline and safe practice during the experiments.

Special thanks to Aki for arranging all equipment.
