WEEK 4

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

We are in the full swing of learning and assessment this week. With students showing immense amount of focus and dedication to their learning. Student attendance in classes is high, and it has been great to see on our walk throughs the school the high engagement in learning.

On Wednesday 76 students eagerly attended our transition day to prepare for their journey into 2024. It was a day filled with arts, dance, HPE, science and get to know you activities. Much of the success of this event can be attributed to the remarkable efforts of Shaun Dati, who has taken on the role of our 2024 Year 7 Coordinator with unwavering dedication and enthusiasm.

Our sporting basketball stars attended the Southside ACT Basketball competition, where students represented our school with respect, integrity and courage. We are very proud of there efforts. On Friday some of our aspiring female leaders attended the YWCA She Leads conference to learn from inspiring leaders about the fundamentals of leadership and explore topics such as peer relationships, self-esteem and body-image.

We are excitedly getting ready for Arts Extrav next week and look forward to seeing families at the shows. Thank you to our Arts team of teachers and support staff that have been preparing students and coordinating this event.

Next week we welcome Steve back after his trip to the USA to visit family. We'll need to go easy on him as he's still recovering from an insane 100 Mile race - yes, that's 161km!

TOUGH MUDDER!
Last weekend, Mr Rodriguez, Helena, and I, along with 17 amazing students, set out for Picton, NSW, bright and early on Saturday morning.

Our mission? To conquer the 5km Tough Mudder course, and guess what? We absolutely nailed it!

The course threw some seriously wild challenges our way, including the bone-chilling Arctic Enema, the Everest wall, the Hero Carry partner task, the Skidmarked inverted wall, and the electrifying Electroshock Therapy mud run with those zappy 10,000-volt wires!

Most students made it through un-shocked, but I may have grabbed hold of the cable and passed on a volt or two, just to add to the experience.

We had our fair share of tumbles, plenty of laughter, and a ton of fun. It was an incredible experience that showcased our teamwork, resilience, and ability to push past our limits.

We made it back to school a little late due to the number of participants at the event, and heavily due to the lack of water pressure in the 'showers' (hoses that needed to be held below ankle height to work) but we made it all in one piece.

SCIENCE EXCURSION
As our own science labs are being re-furbished, Year 10 students travelled to the Academy of Future Skills in Chisholm to do their practical STEM science experiments.

By engaging in excellent, enthusiastic teamwork, they learned and demonstrated the effect of temperature on the rate of chemical reactions by using STEM technology, displaying great discipline throughout the session.

FACULTY UPDATES

ENGLISH
Year 7 students created a one pager to demonstrate their understanding of a character from the novel Coraline.
In Year 8 English, we are exploring the concept of Fractured Fairytales. We are looking at the structure of narratives and how to manipulate this structure for effect. We are looking forward to beginning our creative writing and group presentation assessments over the coming weeks!

The Year 9 students are currently grappling with the following question:

'Some people say that Disney promotes childhood innocence, that it creates spaces where children are safe, and that it provides wholesome family fun. Others…... Suggest That Disney movies promote and reinforce negative or damaging stereotypes.'

This is generating some deep reflection on our childhoods and also great discussion!
MUSIC
This term in music, Year 7 have explored playing a variety of instruments and have developed their aural skills in listening to a wide range of pieces.

Our Year 8, 9 and 10 students have been building and refining their notation skills, applying their knowledge of both traditional notation and software to create their own compositions.
ON COUNTRY LEARNING
Last week the On Country Learning Crew spent the day connecting to connecting to Culture and connecting to Country. We were fortunate to start the day with a  presentation from Birrigai’s onsite land managers Luke and Joel who are Wiradjuri and Ngunnawal men.

They spoke to us about their connection to Culture, family and Country. Our group was incredibly respectful throughout the presentation and were clearly engaged as the Q and A went for almost as long as the presentation itself.

A massive thank you to the Birrigai staff who spoke candidly and honestly about their personal past and experiences and really opened our students eyes to new perspectives. We then followed that up with a trip to the Birrigai Rock Shelter where our boys clearly absorbed and felt the gravity and history of that 27 000 year old shelter.

This week we put into practice the previous weeks learnings of what it meant to be in a team, and work as group, as we tackled the vertical playpen in the morning and finished off with the big swing in the afternoon.

The social responsibility, empathy and comradery was tangible. Fantastic progress and growth in such a short amount of time. Next week it’s starting with the introduction to ropes, readying ourselves for our adventure out to Snake Rock in Week 6.

CONNECTION CLUBS

CAFE CLUB
Year 10 students are continuing to thrive in Coffee Club, as part of their vocational learning, which runs as one of our break time Connection Clubs Program. They have mastered the art of coffee making, keeping teachers happy and caffeinated. This week they treated Mr Ricky to a puppy chino as well!

SCHOOL NOTICES

STRANGER SAFETY
We have had reports of recent instances where students from our school have been approached out of school hours by a member of the community unknown to them.

The safety of students is our highest priority and staff regularly talk to students about stranger safety, moving safely around our community as well as what to do if they feel unsafe. Please support those conversations at home.

If you become aware of an incident or notice anyone acting suspiciously, please contact police on 131 444 or in the case of an emergency call 000. I encourage you to also let our Front Office know.

You may wish to visit the AFP website section on Child Safety for tips. In addition, the Safety4Kids is a non-government website that has useful information and links.
