EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

CHEMICAL REACTIONS SCIENCE EXCURSION
Our Year 10 science students embarked on an engaging journey into the world of chemistry this week with their exploration of precipitation reactions at the Academy of Future Skills. The students were full of curiosity and enthusiasm as they delved into the science behind these reactions.
WARRIGAL RETIREMENT VILLAGE EXCURSION
This week a group of Calwell High School Year 9 students went with Mr Curtis, Mr Kirton and Ms Sheppard to meet some residents of the Warrigal Retirement Village to have a chat and show them how to make terrariums. We all had a fantastic time sharing about life at school and at home and hearing stories about when the residents were at school.

We are looking forward to more opportunities in the future were we can connect with the older residents in our community. The next opportunity we have organised is to invite them to the school to have afternoon tea and after this week a plan started to go back to Retirement Village to join them for a game of bingo or cards!
CAREERS MAKER2MARKET P&C SCHOLARSHIP
Jaylee won a Calwell High School P&C Scholarship to participate in the edii Maker2Market Entrepreneurial School Holiday Program.  She sold her own jewellery and artworks at the Bus Depot Markets on Sunday and had a very successful day selling almost all of her products.

Jaylee is the second student to the program through the scholarships and we are so thankful to the P&C to have given our students this amazing opportunity.

FACULTY UPDATES

OUTDOOR EDUCATION
The Outdoor Education class are getting used to their new surfboards at Erindale pool in preparation for their upcoming surf camp.
ON COUNTRY LEARNING
Week 2's On Country Learning saw our students thinking ahead and beginning to make connections with the program outcomes and the world around them. We spent some time discussing group dynamics and team roles. After understanding a bit more about how everyone can, and does, contribute to their group (in whatever context), we set out to complete the team initiatives course!

After successfully navigating the challenges, we all debriefed on how the teams functioned and what drove their success. After lunch, the team applied all our previous learning in the create climb challenge with all the pairs overcoming the added difficulty of a wobbly platform! Plenty of smiles, laughs and encouragement was seen.  Looking forward to next week where students will be visiting the Birrigai rock shelter and learning a bit about connection to place and Culture.

TERM OVERVIEWS

ARTS

Music
This term in Music a new group of Year 7 students are exploring performing on piano and guitar. In Years 8, 9 and 10, students have been refining their notation skills ahead of their composition assessments this term. This Wednesday we held our auditions for our end of year Arts Extravaganza and students are eager to show off their skills and progress in Week 5.

Dance
Dance students have been working extremely hard with a busy term ahead. With two major performances this term, students have been building their performance skills to produce dance works that express storylines.

Their first performance was yesterday, Thursday 19 October, where 80 of our Dance students headed out to the Canberra Theatre to be a part of the Aus Dance, Youth Dance Festival. They had 3 dance pieces, with our junior classes doing fun character pieces of ‘Winnie the Pooh’ and ‘Hansel and Gretel’, and our seniors performing a piece titled ‘See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil’ which explored societies discomfort in facing their issues.

Now that Dance Fest is finished students are turning all their attention towards our upcoming school show, Arts Extravaganza. Keep an eye out soon for permission notes for participating students and the ticket link for family and friends.

Visual Art
A new Year 7 class has begun their exciting journey through the elements of art, looking at colour in Week 2, having just finished exploring line in Week 1. The Year 8s have begun making their breakout arms; arms that look like they are breaking through the wall into the classroom. The Year 9/10 ceramics class have started making human figures that interact with wooden frames.

Meanwhile in the digital world, the Year 8s have started their awesome music album covers while deepening their understanding of graphic design principles. The Year 9/10s continue working on their characters from term 3, making them ready for imaginative animations.

Drama
In Drama, Term 4 sees a new Year 7 class begin their introductory unit. Students have already shown talent exploring elements of drama such as situation and character by jumping in and performing freeze-frames / tableaux depicting, among other scenes, a science lab and a zoo. This term, students will continue to learn performance skills and build their confidence to perform an over-the-top Melodrama complete with dastardly villains and courageous heroes!

This Term the Year 8 Drama class will focus on two very different units. The first unit is Characterisation - developing a character and putting them in situations of tension to create interesting performances. The second unit is Mask - learning to portray emotion and storytelling with a focus on body language and movement. It will be interesting to see the interesting ideas this bunch of creative students comes up with!

Photography
During Term 4 the Year 9/10 Digital Photo Communication students are enjoying the warmer weather and taking lots of different photographs outside. Each lesson has a specific focus for them to complete. The unit still involves some theory and they already have been assigned all their tasks to complete.

At the moment we are studying a photographer called Brandon Stanton who resides in New York. His work is called “Humans of New York” and they have an adapted photography assessment Task called “Humans of Calwell.’ Another practical that the students have been working on is called “Staple City”.

Here is an example of a students piece of work for this task.

MATHS

Year 7
Year 7 will be exploring the relationships between parallel lines and angles and solving problems using these special angles. Students will then be investigating how to use formulas to calculate the perimeter and area of 2D shapes, and the volume of prisms.

Year 8
Year 8 will be applying the algebraic concepts learnt in term 3 to the next unit of solving equations and graphing linear relationships. They will also be investigating perimeter and area of parallelograms, rhombuses and kites. Students will also explore the features and how to calculate the circumference and area of circles.

Year 9
Year 9 Mathematics students are studying the relationship between angles and side lengths in right angled triangles by learning about Pythagoras’ Theorem and the Trigonometric Ratios. They will also be looking at how these relationships are used to solve authentic problems. After this they will be solving problems involving simple interest. Students will learn the use of trigonometry in practical life as well as in various trades.

Year 10
In Year 10 students have finished their unit on Surface Area and Volume and are moving into their final unit on Financial Maths.  As part of this unit we are providing students with the financial literacy skills to navigate some of the key concepts used in their near futures.  Such as understanding different forms of income eg. wage, salary, commission and how to calculate pay rates from payslips.  We will also explore taxation and how it is calculated and budgeting for life. Lastly we will discuss basic banking terminology and look at purchase loans and calculating interest and repayments.

Year 10A
In Term 4 the 10A class will be learning about Trigonometry and how it is used to solve problems involving right and non right angled triangles. They will also be learning about the Unit Circle and how it relates to trigonometric functions and angle measurements.

Year 7 Numeracy Program
In the 7 Numeracy program, students will utilise the algebraic principles they acquired in the third term to tackle straightforward linear equations and depict linear connections graphically. They will delve into the connections between parallel lines and angles, using these specific angles to address various problems. Tailored interventions will be offered to students, ensuring they are well-prepared to employ their comprehension in solving both geometry and algebraic challenges.

Year 8 Numeracy Program
In the Year 8 Numeracy program, students will extend their understanding of algebraic principles from Term 3 to the subsequent unit, focusing on solving equations and graphing linear relationships. They will also utilise the concept of substituting numerical values into formulas to calculate the perimeter and area of parallelograms, rhombuses, and kites.

Years 9/10 Numeracy Program
In the Year 9/10 numeracy program, students will explore formulas for the area and perimeter of rectangles, as well as calculate volumes of rectangular prisms. They will also learn about the features of circles, calculate the areas and circumferences of circles, and convert between units of measurement for area and volume. Most notably, students will apply their knowledge to practical scenarios drawn from the realm of general building and construction.
HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Years 9/10
Our senior HPE classes have jumped right into term 4 with some amazing rounds of Sport Education, with Line 3 voting for Badminton, Line 5 for Handball (4 Square), and Line 7 voting to play Basketball. All of our lines have been displaying all the values of Calwell with smiles all round. With students used to Sport Ed, the competitions now run like a well-oiled machine.

All classes will be wrapping their Sport Ed units up this week as we prepare to move into our Health unit for the term, Fit Communities Pt.2. In this unit we will investigate the aspects of physical fitness then students will design and implement a small fitness activity for the class.

Outdoor Education
This term, Outdoor Ed has been and will be focussing on our upcoming surf camp. We have been visiting Erindale pool for some time in the water and have familiarised ourselves with our boards and wetsuits.

Our theory consists of learning about hypo and hyperthermia, beach safety (rips and topography), as well as surfing theory. With this knowledge in hand, when we head off for our camp, we will be fully prepared to shred safely! Looking forward to putting our skills into practice.

Human Movement
In our Human Movement class, we have an exciting curriculum ahead. Currently, we are actively engaged in Tough Mudder training, where we are honing our physical fitness and endurance. This practical experience complements our theoretical study, which is centred around functional movement principles.

Once we've completed the Tough Mudder Course, we will transition into a phase where we'll delve deeper into improving our form for commonly performed weightlifting exercises in the gym. This will involve detailed discussions and practical exercises aimed at enhancing our technique and overall fitness knowledge
