WEEK 9

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

This week has been by far my favourite in my time at Calwell High School! Monday evening saw the Information Session for the 2023 Cert II Construction Course for interested students. This brilliant program is conducted in partnership with CIT and provides a great pathway to employment. Thanks to Jennie Sheppard and Andrew Rowe for their passion and innovation in this area. Year 9s then spent the following two days working with Jennie and Andrew to develop Careers Pathways Plans to explore pathways for next year.

On Monday night we celebrated the announcement of Kieran Sibley as New Educator of the Year and our Women in Construction Class taught by Sabina McIntyre, as School Partnership of the Year, in the ACT Public Education Awards. We are so fortunate to have amazingly dedicated staff that are some of the best in the business!

On Tuesday evening we had our Graduation Ceremony, where our Year 10s received their coveted Portfolios, recognising their high school achievements. The Calwell Performing Arts Centre was full of parents, students and staff that were so proud of this group of young people. Year 10 then spared no effort in making sure they all looked dazzling for the Formal, held at the Rex Hotel. The night was a huge success as the year group came together one last time.

Today we were thrilled to hold our Year Award Assemblies, where student effort and achievement was recognised and celebrated. It was an absolute privilege to be able to shake the hands of the award recipients and see the pride they have in their effort.

The week finished off with the P&C Working Bee, where we greatly appreciated the time and effort provided by the dedicated team. It is such a great feeling to be able to work with a P&C so committed to school improvement and supporting staff and students. We are truly lucky.

Have a great weekend – and maybe even a sleep in!

Steve

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

NEW EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD & PARTNERSHIP OF THE YEAR AWARD
Amazing results!

Congratulations to Kieran Sibley, winner of the New Educator of the Year Award and Sabina McIntyre, representing Calwell High School in the Partnership of the Year Award for the Women in Construction Course. A tremendous effort. These humble award winners deserve all the praise they have received.
YEAR 10 GRADUATION
On Tuesday 6 December we celebrated the achievements of our students at the Year 10 Graduation.

We had the honour of being joined by many special guests including Mick Gentleman MLA, Johnathan Davis MLA, Ms Katy Haire, ACT Education Directorate Director-General, and Warrant Officer Class 2 Christopher Mapstone. We also welcomed Michelle Bruce, Chair of the Board, Geoff Puleston, President of the P&C, Glenys Patulny from the Tuggeranong Community Council and Ishaf Ahamed Naizer our 2021 Outstanding Student of the Year.

The graduation was a chance for us to reflect on our Year 10s' high school life and acknowledge the wonderful accomplishments they have achieved. It was great to see our students and their families come together for a final event and recognise our graduates hard work.

Congratulations again to all our graduating students and award winners.

FACULTY NEWS

VISUAL ART
Visual art has finished the year strongly with some lovely final pieces, many of which were displayed at our Year 10 Graduation and Awards Assemblies. Well done to all our students.
JAPANESE
In one of their last lessons for 2022, Year 7 Japanese tried making Japanese yakionigiri (grilled rice balls).

The students mixed in the soy sauce mixture and shaped the patties themselves, then grilled them on the school BBQ.

They said “itadakimasu” as a thank you before eating, then enjoyed the scrumptious flavour that can only be achieved by soy sauce on a hotplate.

P&C NEWS

Hello Parents, Carers and Friends

Now is a good opportunity to reflect on what the year 2022 has meant for us. The words of Alison Elliott, from the ACT Council of P&C Associations, say it best. Alison wrote in her annual President’s report earlier this year:

“On reflection, 2022, whilst another challenging year for parents, staff and students, saw a return to some kind of normal. We saw P&Cs return to their usual fundraising activities, helping reconnect communities. Parents are back on school grounds and face-to-face parent teacher interviews are occurring once again, something parents really value”.

These words still resonate with us today as we approach the end of the 2022 school year, and our P&C is proud to be associated with this journey.

There’s a nice little pictorial view of what P&Cs across Canberra have seen as their highlights for 2022. We get a guernsey, in our own special way, so watch out for a couple of our photos. Watch it here

Monday this week was International Volunteers Day, and an opportunity for us to acknowledge all those who volunteer for our own P&C in various ways, big and small. It all counts, so thank you most sincerely for your efforts.

It was an honour for Michelle Bruce and me to represent our School Board and P&C in the award presentations at this week’s CHS Year 10 graduation ceremony. It was wonderful to be there amongst such a fine cohort of young people as they received their graduation portfolios and special awards in recognition of their achievements.
