WEEK 8

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Week 8 was a brilliant week at Calwell High School. I was so pleased to be involved in several events that really typify the strength of the community. This included our P&C Meeting and Dinner on Wednesday night, where we summarised the progress over the year and made further plans for the work ahead – including the Working Bee next Friday afternoon! It is such a great team, admirably led by Geoff Puleston.

I was also thrilled to share lunch with our graduates from the Cert II Construction Course completed by our students earlier in the year. This is an amazing partnership with CIT, where our students gain incredibly valuable vocational skills. Many of these students are then propelled into school based apprenticeships (ASBAs), completing their studies and trade qualifications at the same time. A special thanks to Andrew Rowe and our new Head of Careers and Pathways, Jennie Sheppard, who are very quickly putting Calwell High School as the leading school in Canberra for vocational and pathways learning. This is an incredibly exciting space to watch next year! Next week, all Year 9 students will be engaging in Career Development planning. These plans will be reviewed over the coming year to help explore future career choices and educational pathways.

We then finished the week off on an incredible high, with our Farewell Year 10 Assembly. The students were excited, emotional and appreciative. It was a fantastic assembly with lots of laughs and a few tears. We will farewell them formally at their Graduation and Formal on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

Have a great weekend!

Steve

P&C NEWS

Hello Parents, Carers and Friends. Just a reminder for our working bee at the school on Friday 9 December 3.30-5.00pm. With the 'Greening Calwell High School' environmental grant project now under way, it will be a great opportunity to help us spruce up the gardens and get them ready for summer!

It will be a chance to meet some of us from the P&C and other parents and supporters. BYO wheelbarrow, shovel and rake (if you can), otherwise just bring yourselves. Food and drinks will be provided to our hard workers.

Please let us know if you can join us to lend a hand! Send an email to callwellhighpandc@gmail.com

Another good news story for the end of the year. The P&C has just received a donation of $8,800.65 from the company 99 Bikes as part of their Earning To Give program.

The program donates 1% of their permanent staff's wages (the donation is in addition to staff earnings) to charities of their choice. This means all money donated by the company is going to causes chosen by individual staff and close to their heart.

Our sincere thanks go to 99 Bikes.

Geoff Puleston, P&C President calwellhighpandc@gmail.com

FACULTY NEWS

LEARNING SUPPORT
In Term 4 Learning Support Literacy, Year 7 and 8 students embark on the annual passion project task where they create and formulate a teaching resource on a topic of their choosing.

Topics ranged from Art History to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the students have been working very hard on their projects. Well done!

CAREERS NEWS

ANU SCHOOL OF MUSIC EXCURSION
Music students travelled to the ANU School of Music to gain an overview of what studying at university looks like. Professor Frank Millward took the students on a guided tour of the School of Music facilities including Llewellyn Hall, the recording studio and a museum room containing pianos and harpsichords dating back to the 1700s.

The students were then taken on a tour of the ANU campus where they got to see all the different faculties and given information about different study options that are available.

CIT HEALTH AND FITNESS EXPLORATION DAY
Calwell High students had an opportunity to travel to the CIT Bruce campus to experience different areas of the health and fitness industry. They got to look through the Fit and Well fitness Centre facilities and hear from instructors regarding available VET courses and employment opportunities in fitness, allied health and remedial massage.

CIT RSA COURSE 2022
Eligible Calwell High students had a chance to complete their RSA qualification through a CIT course run at school. The students were shown specific methods and techniques on how to refuse service of alcohol to intoxicated people as required by the law.

They had to participate in role plays and be deemed competent by the CIT instructor. All passed with flying colours, well done!

If you are experiencing a situation that affects your ability to meet the costs of schooling or everyday essentials for your child, we encourage you to talk to us. Families who are looking for help with the costs of schooling can:

  • talk to the school principal or other staff member about their situation
