WEEK 7

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

This week I had the pleasure of being a 'Shark' in the Shark Tank Class activity in Year 10 HaSS. In small groups, students were tasked with pitching their business idea to the Sharks in an attempt to secure investment in their 'companies'. I was impressed with the amazing business ideas presented - Fitness Centres, Hair and Beauty Salons, Memory Swiping Glasses and the Tazebo - an all in one furniture and gazebo solution! Our economy is in good hands for the future. Thanks to Ms Clothier and Ms Adams for supporting these students with such an engaging assessment task.

On Monday I was thrilled to attend the ACT Year 10 Excellence Awards, where three of our amazing students were recognised for their great work. They received the following awards from Education Minister Berry:
  • Tobey K received the award for Successful Lifelong Learner
  • Brittney M received the award for Confident and Creative Individual
  • Gladis A (absent) received the award for Active and Informed Member of the Community
On Thursday night we also invited our incoming Year 7 students to their first High School Disco, where they were able to meet and mingle with their 2023 classmates. A massive thank you to Ms De Costa for her enormous efforts in making sure the students are well prepared for high school.

A reminder that Monday is the final pupil free day for 2022 for all ACT Public Schools.

Have a great weekend (hopefully we get to experience some sunshine)!

Steve

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

ACT BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
On Tuesday 22 November, our 9/10 girls basketball team travelled to Belconnen Basketball Stadium to compete in the School Sport ACT Basketball Championships as a result of progressing through from the Southside Regionals.

It was a tough start to the day, having only four players as we came up against Lyneham High School. The girls did well to slog it out for the full game, but unfortunately going down 23 points to 6.

In game two we came up against Alfred Deakin, who edged us out by a point in the Southside Grand Final a few weeks ago. Despite some great individual defensive and offensive efforts from our players, Deakin ran away with the win by 12 points.

Our last round game was against Belconnen High School, winners of the Northside Regional Competition, who displayed excellent sportsmanship by lending us a couple of their players so our girls could rotate and get some much needed rest throughout the game.

The girls lifted and played more true to their style, making Belconnen work very hard both on attack and defence. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough, Belconnen edging away in the final minutes to win 28-21.

Our last game of the day was back up against Alfred Deakin in a third/fourth place play-off game. While Deakin started off strongly, the team never gave up and the game was sent into overtime as scores were level at full time. It wasn’t to be though, with Deakin winning the game by a few points at the end of overtime.

Congratulations to all the girls who participated on Tuesday, as well as those who helped get the team to the ACT Championships but who were unable to play on the day.
YEAR 6 TRANSITION DISCO
On Thursday night we welcomed our incoming Year 7 2023 students for a Disco. It was a great night filled with lots of fun, food and of course dancing.

A big thanks to all the Year 9 mentors and Calwell High staff that organised and supported the event, it was a blast. We’re looking forward to welcoming all our new students to Calwell High next year.

HELP WITH THE COST OF SCHOOLING AND EVERYDAY ESSENTIALS
All ACT public schools can help families meet the costs of schooling or everyday essentials – such as personal hygiene products including sanitary hygiene items, school uniform items, book packs and stationery, school excursions, camps, transport and enrichment activities.

Part of public education’s important objective is making access to education more equitable for all students, regardless of personal circumstances. If you are experiencing a situation that affects your ability to meet the costs of schooling or everyday essentials for your child, we encourage you to talk to us. Families who are looking for help with the costs of schooling can:

  • talk to the school principal or other staff member about their situation
  • have a relative, caseworker, friend or advocate make contact on your behalf
  • contact the Education Directorate ETDStudentWellbeing@act.gov.au.
