WHAT'S HAPPENING?
WEEK 6

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

We cant believe it is the end of Week 6 and we only have a couple of weeks remaining for our departing Year 10 students. We have seen a sense of urgency creep into their assignment submissions as they realise it is their final chance to impress their teachers and improve their grades!

As the weather warms up we also remind families to ensure students come to school with appropriate clothing and equipment. In particular, hats and sun protection, and shoes must have enclosed toes to ensure safety in practical subjects.

A special thanks to our Year 8 girls and Ms Flynn, who have teamed up with a charity to make a difference for families this Christmas. Share the Dignity is an Australian charity that works to make a real difference to the lives of women experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence, or doing it tough. Their annual It’s in the Bag campaign is one of Australia’s most popular Christmas appeals, where people are invited to put together bags filled with essential items to donate to someone in need for Christmas. Please support our amazing students and this initiative by donating one or more of the following items, and drop off to the collection point in the Science Staffroom by Friday 9 December.
  • shampoo and conditioner
  • toothbrush and toothpaste
  • deodorant (roll-on preferred)
  • soap or body wash
  • period products
  • handbag or pre-loved bag (If you have a bag that you no longer use, fill it with any of the above items).

Have a great weekend.

Steve

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

ARTS EXTRAVAGANZA
Congratulations to all students involved in the Arts Extravaganza performance last week. It was a fantastic night and our students worked really hard to put together a great night. A big thank you to all family, friends and community members who made it to the show. We look forward to doing it all again next year!

FACULTY NEWS

MUSIC
This week in Senior Music, students have wrapped up their semester by performing for their peers, demonstrating their improvement and hard work on piano, guitar, drums or vocals.
DRAMA
Year 7 Drama are developing picture books as theatre this term and we are working on bringing to life on stage, Piggybook by Anthony Browne. 'Mr Piggot and his two sons behave like pigs to poor Mrs Piggot – until finally, she walks out. Left to fend for themselves, the male Piggots undergo some curious changes...'

The students will be developing their characters, using narration, physical theatre, soundscape and tableaux to bring the scenes to life in groups and will be performing for each other at the end of term.
SCIENCE
Year 9 science students have been creating their own musical instruments and using them to explain the properties of sound waves. As always, we've seen some amazing work produced!

CAREERS NEWS

UC DESIGN EXCURSION
Calwell High School art students travelled out to the University of Canberra where they got to experience what campus life is all about.

They participated in workshops, learning about techniques to make high quality and effective social media promotions as well as the variety of factors that go into logo design.

The students had the privilege of being the first people to see all the graduate's final pieces of artwork before the exhibition opened on Wednesday night.

P&C NEWS

Hello Parents, Carers and Friends. A sincere 'well done' to Calwell High for the excellent achievements and opportunities that we have been hearing about for our kids/grandkids/family members at the school.

A diverse, balanced and well-managed program of learning and positive development continues for CHS students as we move closer towards the end of the 2022 school year and into the fresh opportunities of 2023.

It’s also a good time to recap on the structure of our P&C committee, which now comprises:
President - Geoff Puleston
Vice-President - Libby Melton
Secretary - Pippa Harbers
Treasurer - Michelle Bruce
Committee member - Stacey James
Committee Member - Megan Fox
Delegate to ACT Council of P&C Associations - Geoff Puleston
Delegate to ACT Council of P&C Associations - Pippa Harbers
Calwell High School Board P&C representative - Megan Fox

Of course, the P&C would also benefit from help offered by parents, carers and friends for the many opportunities that exist for us to continue to support the school. With the advent of an increased working-from-home paradigm in recent times there are many opportunities to contribute in small ways, where attending meetings etc is not the core requirement.

Most of the good work goes on behind the scenes in many different ways. Some possibilities are: helping with researching of financial grants that would help the school, helping with coordination / analysis / reporting of surveys conducted by the P&C, helping with organisation of working bees, pursuing funding opportunities from the local business community and farther afield, and many more. So please let us know using our email below, if you can help in any way. All the best,

Geoff Puleston, P&C President calwellhighpandc@gmail.com

SCHOOL NOTICES

A REMINDER TO STAY COVID SMART AT SCHOOL
As we experience new waves of the virus in our community, we need to remember to stay COVID Smart not only in the community but also at school. For the latest advice, watch the ACT COVID-19 update (November 2022) from Chief Health Officer, Kerryn Coleman.

If your child has COVID-19, you must keep them at home and let the school know. Telling us when your child has COVID-19 will also help us track if there is an increase in COVID-19 transmission at school and manage any high-risk exposures for our more vulnerable school community members.

Being COVID Smart is easy

  • Make sure you are up to date with your COVID-19 vaccines, including boosters.
  • Stay away from schools if you are unwell.
  • Wash your hands regularly.
  • Wear a mask in public indoor places if you can (12 years and over).
  • Keep a distance from others when indoors, if possible.

And don’t forget – if you have COVID-19 symptoms, make sure you get tested. You can access a free rapid antigen test from your school’s front office. Keep up to date at COVID-19 (act.gov.au).

ACT YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL NOMINATIONS
Nominations to join the ACT Youth Advisory Council (the Council) are now open. The Council provides young people aged 12 to 25 who have different life experiences and backgrounds with a voice on the issues that matter to them. Council members give advice to the Minister for Education and Youth Affairs, Ms Yvette Berry and advocate for the needs and interests of young people in the ACT.

Young people who are enthusiastic, passionate and committed are encouraged to apply. Nominations close on Friday 16 December 2022. For more information and to apply, contact Youth InterACT on 6205 3064 or go to Youth Advisory Council - Community Services.
