WEEK 5

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Another fantastic week at Calwell High with plenty of highlights. On Tuesday night, I attended our Arts Extravaganza and enjoyed seeing the amazing talents of our students being shared with their supportive families and friends. A huge thank you to our Arts team for providing this and many other quality educational, and highly engaging, opportunities for our students.

Today we held a special Remembrance Day assembly during Aspire. The atmosphere was quiet and respectful as our school community paused to reflect and remember those who died or suffered for Australia's cause in all wars and armed conflicts. We were proud to welcome a guest, Geoff Lewis, from our local Returned and Services League (RSL) branch to share his perspective with our students. The assembly was followed by a poppy making activity. Thank you to our HaSS team for bringing this commemoration together.

We are now at the halfway point in the term and we start to look to our end of year celebrations, transitions and planning for 2023. We have a range of events coming up for our Year 10 students along with a fun activities week planned for our Years 7–9 students in Week 10. Also, in a few weeks our Years 7–9 students will be able to indicate their electives preferences, more information will be distributed to families prior to the process.

This week, I have also met with some new community groups and organisations to ensure we continue to offer a range of enriching community programs in 2023. These partnerships and connections to the community are always so valuable to our students.

Have a great outdoor Saturday, and an equally great indoor Sunday.

Steve

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

SOUTHSIDE GIRLS BASKETBALL
On Wednesday 9 November our team of 9/10 girls participated in the School Sport ACT Southside Basketball Championships being held at Tuggeranong Basketball Stadium.

The girls were slow to start, losing their first game to Alfred Deakin, before coming agonisingly close to beating Lanyon, losing by one point. The girls rallied and won their next two games, beating Telopea and Namadgi convincingly.

It was a nervous wait to see where we would place after the round games, with three schools tied on points with two wins and two losses. It came down to for and against and we made it through to the grand final!

After losing to Alfred Deakin in the first game of the day 18-7, the girls knew it would be a tough battle. After a strong start, Alfred Deakin took the lead back and unfortunately we went down by one point after a late foul was not deemed as a shooting foul, denying Scarlett the chance to have two free-throws to potentially win the game. However, the team will get a chance for redemption, progressing to the ACT Championships alongside our 9/10 Boys team on Tuesday 22 November.

The girls did amazingly well, with only one substitute for the entire day, they all stepped up and did not let up the entire day. Special mentions go to Zoe D; top scoring with 30 points for the day and controlling the games offensively.

Scarlett K was the rebound queen and dominated defensively, battling injury towards the end of the day but never giving up.

Ange C was a machine both offensively and defensively, shooting consistently and not backing down in defence.

Imogen R was solid in defence and always reliable under the basket on offence. Brodie did not stop the entire day, providing options in the key and putting pressure on while defending.

Last but not least, DJ was a late call up on the day and her presence definitely did not go unnoticed, scoring some great baskets and defending solidly throughout the games.

We wish the girls all the best in the ACT Championships!

FACULTY NEWS

ART
Year 7 Art students have been exploring the elements of art and using space and tone to create illusions.
HaSS
Our Years 7 and 9 student helpers recently created these fantastic thank you jars for staff for World Teachers' Day.
Year 7 English students are busily finishing off their Survival Assessment Task. They were tasked with creating a backpack of essential items to help their individual survive a scenario. Here are a few of our favourites.

JAPANESE
Following on from the Japanese drumming workshop last term, junior Japanese students have started Term 4 with a film study of the classic anime movie (and 2003 Academy Award winner) Spirited Away (Japanese title: Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi).

This movie has entranced audiences worldwide with its eerie story (parents get turned into pigs!), complex themes and amazing imagery. It also offers excellent lines of script for students of Japanese – fast, natural and realistic. Calwell students’ task was to watch and carefully listen to Calwell’s own native Japanese speaker, Aki sensei, as she performed lines from the movie.

They then had to imitate her voice to the best of their ability and record this on video, thereby practising an advanced linguistic technique known as shadowing. Young teenage students are known for having superb natural listening and imitation skills and Calwell students impressed with the ability to sound exactly like Japanese speakers.
WOOD AND DESIGN
In Wood and Design, students have been creating flat pack and collapsible furniture. Below is a folding table in progress and the finished result.

CAREERS NEWS

DELOITTE WORK INSPIRATION PROGRAM
A group of Calwell students recently had a unique chance to take a look behind-the-scenes at Deloitte, one of the world's largest professional services network.

The Australian CEO, Adam Powick shared his own life journey with the students and urged them to discover things that they are good at and impressed upon them the importance of developing networks and friendships.

The students participated in a variety of activities and had the opportunity to speak with a diverse group of Deloitte employees about the career journey that led them to be part of an international company.

The Deloitte recruitment team were very impressed with the attitudes, participation and enquiring natures of all our students and expressed what an enjoyable time they had over the two days.

P&C NEWS

Hello Parents, Carers and Friends It was great to be at the opening night of the Calwell High School Arts Extravaganza this week.

Congratulations to our CHS students in the cast and crew for a wonderful night of quality entertainment, and to all CHS staff for helping to make this excellent show possible. Well done Calwell High!

Following our item in the last newsletter, we now have our two CHS delegates to the ACT Council of P&C Associations. They are Pippa Harbers and Geoff Puleston.

The role of delegates is described on the council’s website as: 'Delegates relay information between Council and individual parent associations (P&Cs).

They allow your association to keep your school community informed of what is happening in public education. They also keep us fully informed about parent views in the ACT so we can effectively advocate for parents to government. This way, we can be the parent voice and create change!'
