WEEK 4

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

It has been a great Week 4 at Calwell High School. We were so pleased to host our incoming Year 7 students on Wednesday and Thursday, as well as meeting with their families on Thursday evening. This was followed by our P&C Meeting, where we were able to share some of the great improvement ideas and celebrations from our families.

It was also incredibly pleasing to see our Year 9 students demonstrate their outstanding leadership skills as they mentored their younger peers.

Next week we are all super excited for another taste of Calwell Culture, as we celebrate Arts Extravaganza on Tuesday and Wednesday evening. The students and staff are all working feverishly to put together a great event. Please get along and support our talented students if you can!

Have a great weekend

Steve

SOUTHSIDE BASKETBALL COMPETITION
On Wednesday the 2nd, Calwell took a group of 7/8 boys to Tuggeranong stadium for the Southside basketball competition.   The boys had a strong start, only losing by 6 points to Deakin High, with Dylan Timmer standing out with his speed and ball handling skills.    Game 2 was a much tougher match, unfortunately ending with a score of 31-4. Darvin however did not let this dampen his mood as he put up a fantastic defensive game, severely slowing down Lanyon’s scoring opportunities.   Game 3 & 4 were both closer games, but the boys were starting to work a lot better as a team. Fast breaks were common and the boys were having more fun out on the court. Kit’s rebound game was outstanding during these games, seeing him turn retrieve possession a number of times. Cooper managed to strip the opponents of the ball with fantastic fashion a couple times, whilst Seth put up a great defensive game.   Finally, game 5 against Wanniassa, Darvin, Ifaz, Fritz, Aiden and Oliver came together as a team and managed to perfect their zone defence. Only allowing 6 points against. Height became a bit of a factor, making it hard for us to score, leaving the last games score at 4-6. This was by far the best team defensive game we had all day.   So, although we didn’t manage to snag a win, the boys seemed to have a great day. They were already asking if we could start prepping for next year. The Calwell High School Seniors, The mighty Reds, had a day for the record books, going 5-1 in group play to book the second seed in the group. Local Rivals Lanyon proved to be warm up, as CHS demolished them 25-6. Next we fell to Alfred Deakin in a hard fought 22-12 loss, with costly turnovers proving to be our undoing. A bounce back win against Namadgi kept morale high, with a late barrage of offensive rebounds letting our guards rain threes to win 27-22. Up next was Wanniassa, who again couldn’t keep up with our tenacious defense and fast running offense, the Reds winning 21-9. Orana was the final group play, and we came away with a complete performance on both sides of the ball, winning 35-14.   An all time classic Semi final against Telopea was hard fought, ending at 15-15 and requiring extra time. We ended up winning on a buzzer beater three pointer from local hero Ayden, 18-15, Reds to the championship game.   In the Grand final, a rematch with Alfred Deakin awaited, who outclassed the Reds 31-18 on the back of some hot shooting. Congratulations to the mighty Calwell Reds on second place at Southside championships! Coaches Sibley & Sowton

FACULTY NEWS

HaSS
This week, our Year 8 Geography class moved onto tsunamis in our Natural Disasters Unit. We began the lesson by investigating tsunamis and their causes. Then completed a practical experiment to replicate tectonic plate movement and waves, in order to analyse the impact that tsunamis have on the environment.

P&C NEWS

Hello Parents, Carers and Friends Our P&C at Calwell High is affiliated with the ACT Council of P&C Associations, who are the peak body for parent associations in ACT public schools. They represent over 60,000 parents in 89 schools and assist our member associations. The Council has been representing parent and community views on public education to Government since 1954, doing this through:
  • consulting with public school parent and community groups to identify issues and ideas for improving public education
  • communicating with decision makers and contributing to policy development.
The Council also provides help, resources and training to members - Parent and Citizen Associations (P&Cs), Preschool Parent Associations (PPAs) and other similar parent bodies in ACT public schools - to help their volunteers to run these important organisations smoothly.
