WEEK 3

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Thanks to everyone for another strong week of community. In particular, staff were incredibly grateful for the kind words and poetry shared by our P&C President Geoff Puleston at our Staff Meeting on Wednesday afternoon.

Geoff, Nola, Libby and Michelle were very welcomed guests as they passed on some incredibly tasty treats and gave a 'hats off' to staff on behalf of the P&C to recognise World Teacher’s Day. As a staff, we really do understand just how lucky we are to be part of such as supportive school community.

As we approach the peak assessment period for Term 4, we are reminded that this can cause a perception of increased pressure for some students. Please remember that there is a wealth of student wellbeing supports available at Calwell High School and we encourage students and parents to reach out to their Tutor Teacher or Year Coordinator if they would like to access some of these supports.

Have a great weekend – hopefully without rain for a change!

Steve

ACTIVITIES & EVENTS

ARTS EXTRAVAGANZA
Come watch our annual Arts Extravaganza! Help us celebrate our students achievements throughout the year across the Arts. Keep an eye out for permission notes and details on how to purchase tickets. Arts Extravaganza will be across two nights this year: Tuesday 8 and Wednesday 9 November. Doors will open at 5.30pm for a 6.00pm start. Any questions please email laura.decosta@ed.act.edu.au.
VOLLEYBALL EXCURSION
On Wednesday 19 of October, 13 students travelled to the Lyneham beach volleyball courts to compete in the ACT Beach Volleyball Schools Cup. Along with the students the weather turned up as well, providing a fantastic day, fitting for a beach event.

From our 13 participants, we made up six male teams and one female team. Almost all teams had a win, with Jaydan and Doug doing the best for the boys winning 3/5.

The girls, Ana, Scarlett, Ange and Makayla started out strong, winning their first two games convincingly, but unfortunately were just pipped to the post the third game in. The girls ended up with a record of 3/5 as well.

Isaak and Callum fought all day, managing to draw a game, and only lose by one point in another game. They came up against stiff competition in the Lyneham players who play ACT Club Beach Volleyball.

Isaiah and Jayden managed to play some strong games despite only being able to attend a few trainings. Finally, Adam, Caleb and Kai won 2/5 games, showing their massive improvements from the beginning of trainings in the gym.

FACULTY NEWS

HPE SPORTING SPOTLIGHT
Meet Caleb. Caleb is in Year 10 here at Calwell High School and is doing BIG things. Caleb represented Fraser at the school athletics carnival last term and came first in javelin, discus, shot put, long jump and triple jump.

Caleb then went on to the Southside Regional Track and Field Championships and came first in shot put and discus and third in javelin. Caleb THEN progressed through to the ACT Track and Field Championships where he came first in shot put and third in discus.

Now, Caleb will be representing his state at the 2022 Australian All Schools Track & Field Championships being held in Adelaide, South Australia from 9–11 December. From all of us at Calwell, we wish you all the best and are sure that you’ll do the school, the state, and yourself, proud!
HaSS
Year 8 HaSS this week continued their unit on Geomorphic Hazards and Natural Disasters. Students learned about volcanic eruptions and how they're managed in order to minimise risk.

Students then attempted to make their own volcanos and minimise risk to people and the environment. Unfortunately, in all cases there were no survivors.
