WEEK 8

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

It seems almost unbelievable that we have just two weeks of Term 3 remaining. We have managed to pack so much into the past few weeks, that time really has flown by.

This week saw another group of Outdoor Education students get away for memorable camp, while our Women in Construction class continued to build their employability qualifications and skills, this time completing their Silica Awareness Course. Our students are so fortunate to be acquiring these skills, which are sure to put them well ahead of the game should they choose to enter this industry in years to come. A special thanks to Kim Lum for driving this initiative and making sure Calwell High School is at the top of the list when these unique opportunities arise.

As some students are finding an increase in their academic workload, we also want to remind families of the opportunities for students to engage in catch up work, assignment help and general extension activities. This includes our Flexible Learning Time on a Wednesday afternoon and our Homework Club on Tuesday and Thursday Break 2, and Thursday afternoon immediately after school.

Have a lovely weekend. Go the Raiders.

Steve

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

GIRLS OZTAG
Wednesday 6 September saw a group of our students head to Southwell Park to compete in the ACT Girls Oztag Gala Day. While the weather was a delightful first taste of spring, the competition we faced was tough, with two of the teams we were up against in the round games making it through to the semi-finals. Unfortunately we did not come a way with a win from our four games – however we came very close against St Clare’s College in our third game, only to go down 3-2.

Congratulations to all the players;
  • Zoe and Arijana, our key play makers and try scorers.
  • Lara, Sarah B and Sara L, who played with grit and determination, especially in defence.
  • Brielle and Amilia, who made some fantastic runs and could be relied upon to organise the lines in attack and defence.
  • Holly, Misha, Katelyn and Emma, our junior players willing, eager and more than capable, to play up into the senior competition.

FACULTY UPDATES

FOOD TECHNOLOGY
This week, Fast Food Makeover students created their very own chicken Burritos.
DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY
Year 8 Digital Technology students spent five weeks taking part in a computer coding competition run by the National Computer Science School (NCSS). This Coding Challenge attracts about 20,000 students from around the world.

Each week a series of problems is presented that needs to be solved by writing small computer programs. Each week the challenge gets harder. Calwell students worked well and earned both Credit and Merit awards for their efforts.
SCIENCE
This week, Year 9 students learnt about tectonic plates, earthquakes and designing stable structures.

Students engaged in a practical, designing sustainable structures with a pallet of limited materials consisting of dry spaghetti, marshmallows and hot glue. It made learning a lot of fun!
FLEX ED ENGLISH
On Friday 8 September Flex Ed English students executed creative responses in the form of cake decorating and an eerie tea party!

P&C NEWS

Hello Parents, Carers and Friends

The P&C is looking at further ways in which we can support the school in the continuing development of the 'Greening Calwell High School' initiative. This follows the great work that has already been done with last year’s ACT environmental grant project, various P&C garden working bees, and also with the work of last semester’s CHS Leadership and Service class.

We would like to examine a number of possible opportunities, including an ACT Government grant application in next year’s round (Aug-Sep 2024) for the establishment of a community edible garden. There are of course a whole number of considerations for this, both short-term and long-term, and we welcome input and assistance from the school community as we go forward.

Please get in touch with us at calwellhighpandc@gmail.com to become involved in this great initiative.

Also a reminder for our upcoming P&C meeting at 6.00pm on Wednesday 13 September in the school main staff room. Please join us in the discussions around the above garden initiative and other great things that the P&C is moving ahead with.

All the best
Geoff Puleston, Calwell High School P&C President
