WEEK 7

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Happy National Wattle Day!

Thanks to those that have already completed the School Satisfaction Survey. We are on track to beat the number of responses from previous years and would greatly appreciate your help. The survey closes next Friday.

Week 7 has been incredibly busy with our students out and about in the community proudly representing Calwell High School. Congratulations to our 7/8 Netball Team, who competed in the Southside Schools Netball Competition this week. I was lucky enough to watch them compete in their game against Orana School, where we won convincingly and also showed outstanding sportsmanship. Our girls certainly did the school proud.

Our Outdoor Ed class returned from a fantastic camp in Nowra today, with some extremely excited and tired students. It is truly amazing to see the level of engagement and enthusiasm that the students embrace this course with.

This week we asked our students about the types of electives they would like to see at Calwell High School in the future. We look forward to sharing those results in the coming weeks, as we intend on using this student interest to shape our elective structures in years to come. Our focus on student voice has seen many improvements in the school, and we expect this to be another example of that.

Have a great weekend!

Steve

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES

SOUTHSIDE REGIONAL TRACK AND FIELD COMPETION
Last Wednesday 23 August, students who qualified from our school athletics carnival attended the Woden Athletics Track to compete in the Southside Regional Track and Field Competition.

What started as a foggy morning, cleared into a sunny day with students from all southside high schools coming together to compete. Our students did amazingly well, with 25 students from all years representing Calwell across the majority of events.

Significantly, we have 11 students that have now progressed through to the ACT Track and Field Competition, being held on Tuesday 19 September. On behalf of Calwell, we wish the following students all the best in their events and congratulate all those who competed at the Southside Regionals, many of who only just missed out on qualifying for the ACT Championships.

YEAR 7/8 GIRLS NETBALL GALA DAY
On Thursday 24 August in Week 7, I had the great pleasure of taking these amazing girls to the Year 7/8 Netball Gala Day.

We played six games, won two and lost four games. The girls demonstrated excellent school values and were in high spirits in each game, cheering and supporting each other.

It was also nice to have a visit from Mr Collins during our second game. The girls will be getting a merit award for their efforts, punctuality to training sessions and having a great team spirit during the day.

FACULTY UPDATES

DANCE
In Dance classes, students are working hard towards our Dance Festival performances. They’ve been working on how to incorporate storytelling into Dance to portray different themes, mixing Dance and acting to create stage production pieces.

This year we will have three Dance Festival performances with our Junior Line 2 class doing a Winnie the Pooh themed dance, our Junior Line 4 class doing a Hansel and Gretel themed dance and our seniors doing a Three Wise Monkey themed dance.

All dance pieces are coming along nicely with rehearsals well and truly in action. Dance Festival allows our students the opportunity to work with professionals in music, dance and stage production ending with a big performance at the Canberra Theatre with participating ACT schools. Keep an eye out for permission notes and the link on how to buy tickets to see the show
LSU

Junior Class: Cultivating Green Thumbs and Global Awareness
Our junior LSU students have been passionately engaged in crafting terrariums, showcasing their creativity and connection to the natural world. In addition to this hands-on project, these students have been dedicating their time to personal passion projects, further fuelling their individual interests and skills.

Furthermore, the junior HASS classes have been on a captivating journey to explore the rich tapestry of global cultures and their unique celebrations. This has not only expanded their horizons but also fostered a deeper appreciation for diversity and inclusion.

Senior Class: Delving into Biomes and Practical Applications
The senior class has been delving into the fascinating realm of biomes, gaining comprehensive insights into these intricate ecosystems.

Translating theory into practice, they have been constructing biome models, demonstrating their understanding of the subject matter and honing their creative abilities. This practical approach not only reinforces learning but also instils a sense of accomplishment in our senior students.

Holistic Wellbeing: Focusing on Mental and Physical Health
A vital aspect of our students' growth involves the development of self-care practices. The combined junior and senior LSU PE/Health class has been diligently crafting self-care plans, with a specific focus on enhancing mental and physical well-being. This holistic approach empowers our students to prioritize their health and equip themselves with lifelong practices that foster resilience and balance.

Mathematical Marvels: Exploring Data, Statistics, and Practical Applications
In the world of numbers, our junior maths classes have continued their enthralling journey through the Sport Maths unit. Their exploration of sports data and statistics not only sharpens their mathematical skills but also underscores the real-world relevance of these concepts.

On the other end of the spectrum, our senior maths class is leveraging their mental math prowess through an innovative avenue - Minecraft. This interactive platform enables them to apply their mental math skills in dynamic scenarios, enhancing both their computational abilities and technological fluency.
HaSS
In Year 7 HaSS, students have been investigating the causes behind hydrological hazards. They have focused on the Lismore floods in 2022 as a specific case study to build their skills in interpreting and analysing data to draw a conclusion.

Students were presented with climate data and maps for them to analyse. Their teachers modelled a PEEL paragraph and students then had the opportunity to showcase their understanding of the causes of the event in their own paragraph. The teachers have been excited to read the responses from students!
SCIENCE
This week, Year 8 students learnt about organ systems such as the digestive, respiratory and cardiovascular system. An organ system is a biological system consisting of a group of organs that work together to perform one or more functions. They also covered the functioning of vital organs such as the heart, lungs, stomach, intestines etc. The practical part of this area of study was the dissection of a lamb pluck, (heart, lungs, gut, and liver).

A special thankyou to Jen O’Donoghue and Aki for arranging the lamb pluck for the students, as part of STEM, to learn about the organ system through practical demonstration and dissection.

Dissection Jokes:
Why did the lamb refuse to go to the dissection party?
Because it heard it was going to be a real heart-stopping event!

Why did the heart refuse to participate in the dissection party?
Because he didn't have the guts for it!

STUDENT PATHWAYS & CAREERS

HIGH SCHOOL TO DEADLY CAREERS
This week students participated in a High School to Deadly Careers (HS2DC) program at the University of Canberra. Some of the activities included rotating through different interactive stations to discover a variety of health professions, which gave them an insight into career pathways in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, Allied Health Assistance or Allied Health professions, such as:
  • Audiology
  • Dentistry
  • Exercise science
  • Nutrition and dietetics
  • Optometry
  • Physiotherapy
  • Pharmacy
  • Podiatry
  • Speech pathology
  • Social work
  • Mental Health
The students also received a tour of the UC Health Clinics and had a chance to talk with recent graduates about their personal career journeys in the health industry.
