WEEK 6

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

A beautiful day to end a great week!

Week 6 was all about community. We celebrated Book Week in fashionable style, celebrated diversity on Wear it Purple Day, and proudly recognised the achievements of our Leadership and Community Service Semester 1 class, as they earned the prestigious Order of Australia Association Student Award. This class stood out among many other nominees for the amazing work that was undertaken, including raising funds for charities, leading cultural harmony, volunteering for working bees, and supporting junior sporting carnivals. Special thanks to Francis Ventura and our P&C President, Geoff Puleston, who supported so many of the projects undertaken.

We are so proud to recognise the many positive contributions that our students and staff make in the community. This was evident in the many meetings I have had with prospective staff wanting to join the Calwell High School team next year. They have all stated that they are hearing many good things about the community and are eager to join. Calwell High School Women in Construction students also featured in the most recent edition of the Canberra Weekly. These students have been so engaged in this program and we cant wait to see where this takes them. Thanks to Kim Lum and Andrew Rowe for their work in supporting the girls.

Another reminder to our families to please take some time to complete the School Satisfaction Survey that was recently emailed to you. Students and staff are keen to track our progress over the last twelve months, and value the insights from families that will influence our focus for the next period. Thanks to those that have already completed.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the lovely Spring-like weather. Watch out for the swooping magpies!

Steve

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES

BOOK WEEK
This week Calwell celebrated Book Week with a fancy dress competition. This year, Book Week had the theme of 'Read, Grow, Inspire'. We had a large number of students (and staff!) come dressed as characters that have inspired them. A HUGE thank you to everyone that showed courage by coming to school dressed up. Nicholas won first place dressed as a Canberra Bus Shelter and William came second dressed as Fantastic Mr Fox.
LUNCHTIME RUGBY!
On Mondays, we are very grateful to have the Vikings club come out to us and run rugby union skills and training sessions with anyone who wants to join. This week we practised quick hands, passing, ripping and cleaning out. It’s a great opportunity to expel some energy, have a run around with friends and gain some skills at the same time!

BREAKFAST CLUB
We are grateful to have the opportunity to partner with Foodbank School Breakfast 4 Health Program and local supplier Alpha Fresh. Thanks to their generous donations we are able to offer Breakfast Club and fresh fruit daily to all students.

Foodbank School Breakfast 4 Health gives students the opportunity to eat a wholesome, nutritious breakfast on a regular basis. Having breakfast has been shown to have a positive impact on factors such as physical and mental health, social skills, concentration, behaviour, attendance and academic outcomes.

Alpha Fresh are a family run, local organisation supplying Canberra and locals with fresh produce from across Australia.

Breakfast Club runs on Thursday and Friday from 8.30–9.00am, and fruit is available every day from the Wellbeing Hub.

FACULTY UPDATES

MATHS
Year 7
Year 7 are beginning an exploration of how to use equations to solve problem. We have started off looking at formulas and how to substitute into them to solve real work problems liking finding distance given speed and time or determining the monthly cost of charging a mobile phone. Students will begin to look at using backtracking to solve equations. Keep asking your young ones about weekly tasks on EP that can be completed at home or as part of weekly revision.

Year 8
Year 8 have started the term by learning about Algebra and Algebraic techniques to solve problems. They have learnt how to add, subtract, multiply and divide algebraic expressions.

Year 8 are now working on acing how to expand and factorise expressions. They are about to work toward completing a formative assessment item, this will give them feedback on how much they have currently learnt, and what they need to work on.
Year 9
Year 9 students are learning Cartesian coordinates. They plot, on a graph, the gradient and slope of a plane. They also work out the distance between two coordinates on a plane.
Students solved examples on the white board and explained the interpretation of graphs to the whole class.

Cartesian coordinates are essential tools for most applied disciplines that deal with geometry, including astronomy, physics, engineering and many more. They are the most common coordinate system used in computer graphics, computer-aided geometric design, and other geometry-related data processing.

In the real world, graph theory is used in the internet field, Google maps/ Yahoo maps, social media, web Page searching, City Planning, Traffic Control, criminology, accountings, trades, city planning, traffic control systems, airlines, timetable scheduling and so on.
10A
In the exciting world of Year 10 Advanced Maths, students have been delving into the realm of quadratic equations and developing their skills in solving these mathematical puzzles. However, their exploration didn’t stop there. They have also been connecting the dots between algebraic expressions and graphical representations. By bridging these two fundamental aspects of mathematics, students gained a deeper understanding of how equations translate into visual representations, which will continue with their current topic of Polynomials.

Maths Competition
This August, Calwell High School again provided an opportunity for students to participate in the Australian Mathematics Competition which is run by the Australian Mathematics Trust. The AMC has been run every year since 1978 and is now one of the largest of its kind in the world.

This year a good number of students form all year groups participated. These students were tested in their mathematical thinking through a range of difficulty levels that challenged even the strongest students. We look forward to seeing their results once they are released by the Australian Mathematics Trust.
NUMERACY PROGRAM
Juniors
We're excited to share that our junior numeracy program students have embarked on their journey into the world of Algebra and patterns. Throughout this unit, these young learners have been diving into algebraic concepts, getting a grasp of algebraic conventions, and honing their skills in writing algebraic expressions.

An aspect of their learning journey has been the exploration of various terminologies associated with the four fundamental operations. The students' dedication and hard work have truly paid off, as evidenced by their impressive performance on the formative assessment task.

Moreover, a key highlight of their progress has been their development of the ability to substitute values into provided expressions. To facilitate this learning process, students have creatively employed different coloured pens on the whiteboard. This visual approach has greatly enhanced their understanding of how values seamlessly slot into expressions, leading to accurate results.

We are immensely proud of the dedication and achievements of our junior numeracy students during this Algebra and patterns unit and encourage them to continue with their hard work and commitment.

Seniors
Senior students of the numeracy program have been working on the Algebra and pattern unit since the beginning of this semester. What makes their learning journey truly exceptional is the hands-on application of the algebraic skills they've acquired.

Through engaging with scenarios drawn from the realm of general building and construction, these students are actively putting their knowledge to practical use. This practice of relating what they have learnt in class to trades has helped to bridge the gap between what they have learnt in previous years and what needs to be remembered and re- learnt for use in the trades.

By interlinking classroom insights with tangible, trade-related contexts, our senior students are not only solidifying their foundation but also paving the way for future success in real-world settings.

SCIENCE
In Week 6, Year 7 students are learning about buoyancy, air resistance and drag in their topic on forces. We have been building and testing how to float boats to test their buoyancy, and enjoyed designing different parachutes to see how forces affect their motion.

How Do Parachutes Work?
The drag force resists the downward movement of gravity, pushing the parachute back up. As the parachute falls, the drag increases until it just balances out the pull of gravitational force. At that point, the parachute stops speeding up, and begins to descend at a steady speed.

A parachute works by forcing air into the front of it and creating a structured ‘wing’ under which the canopy pilot can fly. Parachutes are controlled by pulling down on steering lines which change the shape of the wing, cause it to turn, or to increase or decrease its rate of descent.
HaSS
In Journalism and Media, our Year 9 and 10 students tried their hand at broadcast journalism. Students have been learning about the skills and techniques needed to work in the field, and have had an opportunity to create their own news broadcast on current events.

CONNECTION CLUBS

CALWELL CLIMBING CLUB
This week we really put the new and improved wall to the test. With good music and good vibes, we had around 30 students having a go at a myriad of new routes with four climbing stations available and an extra 50 holds on the wall. Some great leadership and mentoring was displayed by our Outdoor Ed students as they supported other students without the experience to climb and belay safely.

Looking forward to building some skills and stamina on the wall moving forward!

P&C NEWS

Hello Parents, Carers and Friends

Many thanks to all those who helped with the setting up and running of our Calwell High P&C BBQ sausage sizzle last Saturday at the Calwell Markets. It was an enjoyable and successful day for us, as we engaged with the local community and raised funds to support our school. We also thank Calwell Shopping Centre and the Market’s organisers for their generous support.

The event gave us the opportunity to extend Calwell High School’s positive message more widely to the community and to promote the work that the P&C is doing. Check out our excellent brand-new P&C signage in the photo!

All the best
