WEEK 5

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

As we reach the half way mark of Term 3, we are able to reflect on the amazing number of things our students and staff have been able to jam into five weeks. We have celebrated:

  • Outdoor Ed Camps
  • Homework Club
  • Student Career Expos
  • Whitecard and Asbestos Training
  • Sporting successes
  • Dancefest Choreography
  • On Country Learning
  • Connect Clubs
  • First Aid Courses
  • Mathematics Competitions
  • Student Leadership
  • Investment Championships
  • Science Week
  • Try a Trade Day
  • Breakfast Club
  • Flexible Learning with University of Canberra Tutors
  • ……and many more.

We wouldn't blame our students for being tired!

This list also highlights the important learning that happens outside of the traditional classroom. We will continue to seek input from our students, through our focus on student voice, to ensure we cater for a variety of learning needs, interests and aspirations.

A reminder that we really value any feedback from our community and ask that you consider completing the annual School Satisfaction Survey when it arrives in your inbox. This allows us to measure our growth and identify areas to target for future development of our great school. Please remember however, that feedback is always welcome and we encourage you to contact the front office if you would like to speak to a staff member directly.

Have a great weekend.

Steve

SCHOOL SPORT SOUTHSIDE SOCCER COMPETITION
On Monday 14 August, Calwell attended the School Sport Southside Soccer Competition with a fabulous team of mixed gender and ages competing in the boys 9/10 pools.

It was a great day out, largely in part to the rain holding off. All of our players had a fantastic time on and off the field, playing against peers from their local clubs.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to take out any wins on the day, but sportsmanship and soccer were the real winners for the day!

FACULTY UPDATES

JAPANESE
Senior Japanese students are starting a new course this semester. It’s called Erin’s Challenge and it is a video-based course provided by the Japan Foundation. It focuses on the story of an English girl called Erin who has just arrived in Japan as an exchange student. She makes new friends, tries new food, goes shopping and experiences a Japanese festival.
Our Year 7 students are working on a new voice recording task, this time based on the classic film Kiki’s Delivery Service. If your child is in Year 7, please ask them to show you their video of them speaking in fast-paced, natural Japanese.
HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Years 7 & 8
Our Junior H&PE classes are currently engaging in their Term 3 health unit, Active Connections, which has classes looking at the connections between physical activity and culture, history, and nature.

This has us exploring the importance of nature and the environment, as well as, specific ways in which connection to our environment can improve our health and wellbeing.

Classes will also build knowledge and understanding of the significance of physical activity throughout history and across a range of cultures.

Years 9 & 10
All senior classes have been busy in the classroom for the past two weeks and while it may not be everyone’s favourite part of Health and Physical Education, students are delving into this term’s health unit; Fit Communities.

The focus of this unit is on proposing and evaluating interventions to improve fitness and physical activity levels in communities. Students are honing their ability to evaluate programs as they investigate and analyse existing interventions to improve physical activity levels in communities at a local, national or global level.

They are also exploring the benefits of being physically fit and active as well as the consequences for individuals and communities who are not physically active. As they work to develop their understanding, students will ultimately propose their own intervention to overcome barriers to being physically active within the Calwell community.
SCIENCE
This week, Year 7 students gained an understanding of two types of forces; air resistance and friction. They did this by engaging in some fun games.

The renowned painter and engineer, Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), recorded two well known laws of friction. He did this 200 years before Sir Isaac Newton put forward his theory on the laws of gravity.

Fun facts:
  • If there is no friction, moving objects will never stop. They would go on and on forever.
  • Friction is an important force, stopping all type of motion.
OUTDOOR EDUCATION
We are well underway in our preparations for the upcoming rock climbing camp to Nowra. Students have written their camp menus and practised pitching the school tents. We have also been practising our climbing at PCYC and on our own school wall.

In super exciting news, after a Herculean effort by John Watts (our BSO) this week, Calwell High School has a new and improved artificial climbing wall with more routes, stations and safety equipment. A massive thank you to John for all his efforts and support. Looking forward to sharing some pictures of the upcoming camp.

ON COUNTRY LEARNING
Our On Country Learning focus from last week was continued and emphasised this week when we spent the morning heading up to the Birrigai Rock shelter, looking out through Jedbinbilla and learning about the surrounding flora and fauna. We looked at the different signs around us and really connecting to where we were.

At the Rock Shelter, time was spent reflecting on our Indigenous history and culture and it’s significance in shaping who we are today. The afternoon was spent connecting as a group, supporting each other to push through comfort zones and beyond with all students getting on the Big Swing.

The group development and growth that comes out of this activity is just wonderful to see. Another wonderful day out at Birrigai. Next week we have an introduction to ropes with Vertical Playpen and an abseiling session at Bunyips.

WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION
The 9/10 Women in Construction class have had a busy week. On Friday 11 August, the class attended CIT’s Try a Trade Day. They got to get their hands dirty and try various trades from the Building and Construction industry, these included plastering, carpentry, brick and block laying and painting.

A great day enjoyed by all. On Tuesday and Wednesday this week, the class had the opportunity to sit their training to obtain qualifications in White Card and Asbestos Awareness, well done to them for passing.

They were lucky enough to have a tour of the construction site in Woden where the new CIT, light rail and bus interchange will be. Upcoming in September will be their Silica training, this will then allow the girls to access work experience in Building and Construction.

2023 WORK INSPIRATIONS
This week Calwell High students attended a two-day workshop at Ernst and Young (EY) to gain an insight into the career opportunities available in a global company.

EY employees shared their own career journeys with our students and helped them with activities designed to highlight important skills that are required in the workplace. Thank you to The Smith Family and their partnership with EY for providing this great opportunity to our students.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING

After last week’s focus on our Respect value, we had record numbers of merits given out to students embodying these behaviours in and out of the classroom! This week’s PBL focus has been on our behaviours under our Self-Discipline value:
  • Right place at the right time
  • Safe choices
  • Wear our uniform with pride
Please have a conversation with your student regarding these behaviours and how applicable they are to not only our school and community environment, but to everyday situations!

WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?
In early 2023, the Office of the Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment (OCSE) sent out postcards to schools across the ACT asking students to respond to: What are your hopes for the environment? We have written a report for young people that highlights some key insights from the project. The report also gives a set of recommendations about our environment as voiced by young people in the ACT.

The report is available at I want to have a future - a report on young people's hopes for the enviroment in the ACT. For further information please email envcomm@act.gov.au.
