WEEK 4

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Week 4 was another bumper week of activity at Calwell High School. We saw our On Country Learners engage in another fun day of challenges and skill development (despite the flat battery on the bus). We also had our Women in Construction Class participate in the Try a Trade Day at CIT. This is such a great opportunity to see the industry up close and active, with the girls all buzzing when they returned this afternoon.

We will soon be asking families to complete the annual School Satisfaction Survey. We encourage as many families as possible to complete this survey as it provides a great indication of our progress and also a guideline for future direction.

Enjoy this beautiful weather and go the Matildas!

Steve

FACULTY UPDATES

OUTDOOR EDUCATION WEEK 4
Another fantastic trip out to Erindale PCYC for both classes with huge improvement in climbing with almost everybody making it to the top of at least one climb!

We have one more session booked in in Week 6 at PCYC before we really test our mettle on camp on a natural cliff! Both classes have been phenomenal representatives of Calwell High school sharing the space respectfully with other members of the public.

Some exciting news – our own indoor climbing wall in the gym is getting a revamp and overhaul. We will soon be able to build our own climbs and have significantly greater variation of routes available to all levels of climbers. This would absolutely not be possible without John (our Building Services Officer), so a massive thank you to him!

MUSIC
The Year 7s have hit the ground running this term, already launching into practising for their end of term performances on either the piano or guitar. We have also investigated the elements of music and worked on analysing student chosen songs.

In the upcoming weeks we will start looking at specific composition techniques and students will have the opportunity to create their own pieces on music.
Year 8 has spent this week creating their own drum kits by recording samples of random objects and instruments around the music room.
In Years 9 and 10, students have started examining and analysing music from topics of their choice in our Music Projects unit. We have a wide range of passions across the classes, ranging from Green Day to Musical Theatre and Tina Turner.

In Music In The Media, students have been creating their own pieces, improving their compositional techniques and making music worthy of being in a video game.
ENGLISH
Year 7 students are currently reading the novel Coraline. At first glance, it seems like a straightforward story, but we are fast learning that there is much to unpack from the novel.

While analysis of the plot and characters is part of our unit, we are discovering the techniques that authors use to create suspense and tension and the various ways that we as readers make connections and create meaning through explicit, implied and, critical analysis and interpretation.

Next term, we will watch the film and study cinematic techniques and the secrets behind stop animation.
Year 8 have been hard at work exploring the concept of stereotypes in literature. We have been using the film 10 Things I Hate About You to explore the concept of gender stereotypes and how they are portrayed in media. As we move through Term 3, we will be writing film reviews and creating presentations. We are really enjoying the term so far and look forward to more exciting things that lay ahead!
This term, Year 9 English is exploring Gothic Horror through various  texts and films. Our driving question is; What is gothic horror and how has the genre evolved over time? We will be getting creative with an Infographic Poster and a Short Story as our assessment items.
SCIENCE
This week in science, Year 7 students are learning about simple machines along with balanced and unbalanced forces.

Students cut aluminium cans into various shapes, demonstrating great work safety and discipline, to show the work of a simple machine.

CONNECTION CLUBS

CALWELL CLIMBING CLUB!
Climbing club has kicked off for the semester!  With music back in the gym, we had a great atmosphere with a good turn out. We are looking to have the club running weekly due to demand!

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING

Over the next four weeks staff and students will be focussing on our four school values; Respect, Self-Discipline, Courage and Achievement.
Staff will be acknowledging and rewarding students who are displaying our expected behaviours. This week our focus has been on our behaviours under our Respect value
  • Respect others' right to learn
  • Be polite, kind and use appropriate language
  • Take care of belongings and property
Next week’s focus value will be Self-Discipline, Week 6 will be Courage and Week 7 will be Achievement. Please have a conversation with your student regarding these behaviours and how applicable they are to everyday situations!

STUDENT PATHWAYS & CAREERS

CANBERRA CAREERSXPO 2023
On Wednesday 9 August, Year 9 and 10 students travelled to Exhibition Park (EPIC) to seek information on career and study pathways. They got to look at over 150 local and national exhibitors, including universities, colleges, VET and career placement organisations, providing a wide range of information sources.

Many students came away with bags filled with information and merchandise from the exhibitors and tales of defence force vehicles and hardware along with flying a helicopter in a simulator. Thank you to all our incredible students for a great day out!
CIT COFFEE COURSE 2023
For the past three weeks students from Calwell have been participating in vocational learning through CIT at the Tuggeranong Campus. They have been learning about correct hygiene practices in commercial practices and how to use a commercial grade coffee machine to make 11 of the most common coffee types.

The course covers every aspect of the correct way to make and serve coffee including getting the correct grind, proper tamping pressure, pour rates, crema quality and milk texturing. Our students have picked up the techniques very quickly and the quality has been outstanding, well done to everyone.
