WEEK 1

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Semester 2 has started off in typically busy fashion with high levels of energy in the playground and classrooms. We are excited to be witnessing the progress of the science lab upgrades and also the arrival of some shiny new classroom furniture. This coincides with the redevelopment of our library space, which now allows for lecture-style learning presentations, where multiple classes can come together for the instructional phase of the lesson, before then breaking off in to collaborative learning groups.

We are also looking forward to the continued evolution of our Flexible Learning Time (FLT) on Wednesday afternoons. This coming week will see our first attendance of volunteer tutors from The University of Canberra. This week they will be on hand to provide one on one and small group support to students needing assistance with any homework tasks or assignments, particularly in the English/HaSS subject area. We encourage families to talk to their children to encourage them to take up these unique opportunities to extend their learning.

During these FLT sessions, we also have approximately 25% of our student population involved in planning and rehearsing for Dancefest. These incredibly strong numbers are reflective of the great culture around the performing arts at our school and we are eagerly anticipating great performances in early Term 4.

Have a great weekend.

Steve

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

MAKER2MARKET TASTER PROGRAM
The Maker2Market taster program is for young people (aged 10-17) who are creative, love making things, probably been tinkering for a while, and have the aspiration to start their own business. The program aims to build life and crucial 21st-century skills and entrepreneurial mindset through a real-world, intensive business life cycle experience.

One of our students, Haajrah, earned a scholarship to participate in the program and impressed the organisers with her attitude and engagement along with completely selling out of the products she made which is a very impressive feat. Congratulations Haajrah for working hard to develop a successful micro-business!

P&C NEWS

Hello Parents, Carers and Friends

Our Calwell High School Alumni initiative is proceeding well, with 17 responses so far. Please spread the word for any other CHS ex-students to let us know if they would be interested in attending the school to meet with students in a format that suits them. We are looking to inspire our students through the sharing of stories and experiences. Our thanks go to Pippa Harbers for facilitating this excellent initiative.

Arrangements are in place for our P&C to run a bbq stall at the regular monthly Calwell Markets, commencing Saturday 19 August. This is an excellent opportunity for engagement with the community, to support local businesses, and of course an excellent P&C fundraising opportunity in support of our school. A big thank-you to Michelle Ayers for coordinating this activity.

We will be sending a callout for volunteers shortly to help staff the stall on the day, so please stay tuned

Cheers, Geoff Puleston, Calwell High School P&C President
