WEEK 6

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

This week we had the pleasure of celebrating Book Week with our Years 7 & 8 students which included a fantastic assembly and some awesome costumes and dress ups, none better than the amazing Spiderman aka Sebastian.

I also greatly enjoyed visiting Ms DeCosta's Dance class where students were busy preparing for the 2022 Ausdance Youth Dance Festival at the Canberra Theatre. It was great to see the collaborative learning and creativity that Miss DeCosta fostered in this class. I can't wait to see them perform next month.

Lastly, families are reminded that Friday 9 September (Week 8) is a pupil free day across the ACT Education Directorate.

Have a great weekend.

EVENTS

SCIENCE WEEK

Students at Calwell participated in Science Week activities during ASPIRE. We explored the 2022 theme of glass and then created a stained glass tree window. This linked nicely to our ‘Greening Calwell High’ project, where Calwell High School were successful in winning an ACT Government ‘Nature in the City’ grant.

Students worked with Mr Curtis and some of our P&C parents to prepare garden beds in anticipation of our tree planting ceremony coming up in a few weeks. This important work will continue over the next few months as our school community works to green up Calwell High!

GREEN UP CALWELL HIGH SCHOOL
Students from across the school are, with great enthusiasm, making green cool.

Calwell High School’s contribution to National Tree Day activities this year is to establish a native garden of diverse native trees and shrubs around the library plaza. It was great to see a number of P & C parents come along to join in the fun.

The garden will create a diverse palate of native colours and also, we hope,  attract and keep smaller creatures and birds safe as well as give us shade and a break from the winter wind. We will begin planting in the next couple of weeks, so keep an eye out for the dates.
BOOK WEEK
On Wednesday 24 August, Year 7 had their dress-up day for Book Week. Everyone had a great time as both students and staff got into the spirit of things.
STAFF vs STUDENTS VOLLEYBALL
On Thursday we held our third Staff vs Students Competition for the year – this time taking it to the volleyball court.

Our Year 9/10 HPE students have been participating in a volleyball competition during PE classes so expectations and confidence were high going into the match up. Unfortunately for the students, the staff dominated the court with a convincing three set win.

It was great to see so many students participating or cheering on both teams. We hope to hold another one in the coming weeks – stay tuned!

FACULTY NEWS

ENGLISH
Mr Sibley’s Year 8 English class helped out with Book Week decorations in the Library and enjoyed a 'Blind date with a Book' which encourages students to enjoy a book unknown to them.

NATIONAL CHILD PROTECTION WEEK 4-10 SEPTEMBER
National Child Protection Week is all about the ways that we can all work together to build communities that support children and families.

Children are safest when they are listened to, respected and believed.

All adults can play a part by ‘tuning in’ to children in everyday situations about small worries; then they are much more likely to feel comfortable telling us if something big is wrong.

Talking with children about safety:
  • Support children to identify trusted adults (both within the family and outside) they can talk to, if they are worried, upset, or don’t feel safe. Make sure these adults know they are on your child’s list.
  • Remind children that they can talk to you or a trusted adult about anything, no matter how big or small their worry might be.
  • Talk to children about how they know when they feel safe or unsafe. Help them to listen to their early warning signs (how their body feels), and to trust their feelings and instincts.
  • Use everyday activities as opportunities for conversations (e.g., preparing meals and snacks, going for walks, playing, shopping). If children are used to having lots of communication, it can make it easier to talk when big or tricky issues come up.
  • Be open to talking about all kinds of feelings, including anger, joy, frustration, fear and anxiety. This helps children to develop a ‘feelings vocabulary’.
National Child Protection Week is a great time to start conversations with children and families about feeling safe. Want to know more about getting involved in Child Protection Week? Visit https://www.napcan.org.au/get-involved-2022/

P&C NEWS

It was great for the P&C to be invited to the school last week for the ‘Greening Calwell High School’ project's kick-off. Vice-president Libby Melton and I saw a well-organised and fun activity, with class after class rotating throughout the middle session as students and staff prepared the many garden beds at the back of the school.

Everyone got to work with rakes, hoes, shovels and forks to clear and weed the beds for upcoming spring planting. It was an impressive sight to see everyone getting involved – well done Calwell High!
