WEEK 5

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

On Thursday afternoon it was great to recognise our Champion House and Age Champions from our Athletics Carnival held on Wednesday 10 August. The students were very excited as it was the first time in years that the whole school had come together for a celebration assembly.

Congratulations also to our Girls in Construction students who were issued with all of their protective clothing for the worksite before heading offsite to continue their course yesterday. We are extremely fortunate to be able to link these students with this learning and provide a genuine leg up into a excellent future career.

Our Year 9 and 10 cohorts visited the CareersXpo on Wednesday. They returned to school in the afternoon talking enthusiastically about some of the activities that they were able to engage with at the Expo. Staff were extremely pleased with the excellent and mature behaviour the students demonstrated.

This week I enjoyed visiting Ms Clothier’s Year 10 English class. The strong and positive relationships between the students and Ms Clothier were clearly evident as students engaged in a character analysis of the classic movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. It was obvious that there were high levels of mutual respect and fun in that classroom.

Have a great weekend.

Steve

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
Finally, after three years of restrictions that have hampered the majority of our school sporting opportunities, students of Calwell High School converged on the Calwell Playing Fields for our first athletics carnival since 2019. What started as a cold and frosty morning turned into a beautiful sunny day and conditions were right for some fantastic results from our students.

While some students chose to participate by supporting their peers, helping with the BBQ and other jobs, or taking part in the novelty events; a large majority of students took part in events ranging from the 1500m run, to the 100m sprint, to shot put, triple jump and everything in between.

It was great to see so many students having fun, giving it a go and achieving some outstanding results.

Congratulations to the following students who were awarded Age Champions based on their results across a range of events;

12 Years Boys – Neven R
12 Years Girls – Holly J
13 Years Boys – Darvin M
13 Years Girls – Skylar F
14 Years Boys – Dylan T
14 Years Girls – Arijana M
15 Years Boys – Max D
15 Years Girls – Sara L
16 Years Boys – Caleb S
16 Years Girls – Keira J

The final House Points results were;

1st – Fraser 431 points
2nd – Freeman 400 points
3rd – Irwin 312 points
4th – Webber 293 points

Thank you to all who came along, to all the staff who made the day happen and a very special thank you to Stacey and Lucas James who volunteered their time, expertise and resources to help set up for the day and run the 100m sprints.

Students who placed in the top two in an event in their age group have qualified to progress to the Southside Track and Field Competition being held on Thursday 1 September and have been notified of their qualification.
SOUTHSIDE SCHOOL SPORT SOCCER TOURNAMENT
Our Boys Soccer team entered the Southside School Sport Soccer tournament on Monday 15 August. It was a great day hosted by Orana School at Mawson Playing Fields.

Seven boys teams and four girls teams participated on the day in quite gusty and chilly conditions. Our boys fought hard in all of our match ups against some very strong teams. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to win any of our games on the day.

We played teams from Lanyon, Deakin, Telopea, Stromlo, and Orana. Asha G managed to score our only goal on the final buzzer of the final game which was quite an exciting moment for our boys.

Thanks to School Sport ACT, Orana School, and Capital Football for putting up a great day!
CAREERSXPO
On Wednesday, 100 Years 9 & 10 students visited the CareersXpo at Exhibition Park. This is an annual event open to secondary students throughout the ACT and surrounding NSW providing information on career and study pathways.

There were over 120 local and national exhibitors, including universities, colleges, VET and career placement organisations, providing a wide range of information sources. Students engaged with experts in a variety of areas, and also engaged with interactive and hands on displays in order to consider their futures beyond high school and college.

This was a great opportunity for our students, and we encourage them to reflect on some of the opportunities they engaged with during the excursion.
