WHAT'S HAPPENING?
WEEK 4

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

The highlight of Week 4 was undoubtedly our Athletics Carnival. In my short time here I have not seen such collective happiness and laughter. We were extremely proud of the outstanding participation from our students. I would also like to pay special mention to our PE Teams and Sports Coordinator, Liz Chester, and also the outstanding contributions from one of our parents, Stacey James, who volunteered her time and resources to make the day very special. We are so lucky to have parents and community members that are committed to the wellbeing and engagement of our students.

We also enjoyed a P&C Meeting last night, where we were treated to dinner from Dominos Pizzas. We discussed the progress of our School Improvement Plan, with a focus on the development of PBL. It was great to be able to share the data showing great improvements in student behaviours, and we look forward to providing more updates in future meetings.

Road Safety
Please remind your child to exercise safety when travelling to and from school, particularly around the roads adjacent to the school. In addition, please be sure not to park in prohibited areas where pedestrians can be obstructed.

Have a great weekend.

Steve

PLANTS ARE TAKING ROOT IN CALWELL HIGH SCHOOL'S GARDENS
Calwell Parents and Citizens Association were recently informed by Rebecca Vassarrotti, the Minister for the Environment, that we were successful in winning an ACT Government ‘Nature in the City’ grant. ‘Greening Calwell High School’ is our project.

The intention is to provide a greater biodiversity of flora for our fauna and build more edible garden plots. As part of our celebration of ‘National Tree Day’ all our Aspire tutor groups will be preparing garden beds behind the library for our celebratory planting on 17 August. Over the next year we will be involving students in several different garden projects to green-up Calwell.

Many thanks to Michelle Bruce, our past president of the Parents and Citizens, and to Pippa Harbers for their support in making this happen. Pippa is a School Board member, and together with the Parents and Citizens Association we will be keeping you, our wonderful community of parents and families, informed about what we are doing and the ways you can join in. Geoff Puleston, our new Parents and Citizens president also brings a wealth of experience, and community connections to help develop the garden projects here at Calwell.

Welcome and thank you to Tracey Johns who has joined our growing team of Calwell gardeners. Tracey is a horticulturist and runs a business, ‘Antiquus Botanicus’. Tracey was also one of the first students to attend Calwell High as well as being mum to Sally and Lucy. If you would like to find out more, get involved, or have suggestions please see Pippa, Tracey, or myself.

2022 SCHOOL SATISFACTION & CLIMATE SURVEY
Each year, the Directorate surveys all parents and carers, school staff and students in Years 4 to 12 about their experience of public education. The 2022 surveys will be available online from 19 August to 9 September.

I am writing to inform you about the student survey. Information about how to opt out is also contained in this letter.

Why are we doing the survey?
The data collected are used to inform government policy and underpin school improvement practices. The results will also help us to identify what we do well as a school and where we can improve.

What is involved?
The student survey is administered as a classroom task and takes 15-20 minutes to complete. In addition to items developed to measure satisfaction, the survey includes a school climate module that forms part of a longitudinal study being conducted in partnership with researchers at the Australian National University (ANU).

Key elements of school climate include school identification (a sense of belonging and connection to school), academic emphasis (support and encouragement of learning and success), relationships (feeling valued and respected in dealings with others) and a sense of shared mission, rules and processes in the school, which are important indicators of educational outcomes and quality of the learning environment.

How will privacy be managed?
At the start of the survey, student identification numbers will be used to confirm the identity of students and enable survey responses to be linked over time and with administrative and performance data. Connecting data in this way will help researchers to assess relationships between improvements in school climate and educational outcomes and enable a better understanding of patterns over time.

All personal information will be handled in accordance with the Information Privacy Act 2014. Details about how personal information is stored and used are available in our Privacy Policy (available at education.act.gov.au). No personal identifying information will be provided to any school or college.

What do I do now?
If, after reading this information, you do not want your child to do the survey, please contact the front office by Friday 19 August.

Thank you for considering this request. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
