WEEK 2

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

It was so pleasing to host assemblies again this week. Staff and students were entertained by an amazing dance performance by the very talented Shinaye, which highlighted the wealth of talents that our students possess. We were also able to present many students with Bronze, Silver and Gold Merit Awards, recognising great work from Term 2. It was also so great to see the students that received awards so well supported and congratulated by their friends.

We are eagerly looking forward to the Athletics Carnival in Week 4. These events are a always a fantastic day and have a real focus on fun and participation. Fingers crossed for a sunny August day!

A reminder that next Friday is a Pupil Free day across ACT High Schools.

Have a great weekend.

Steve

FACULTY NEWS

ENGLISH
This term Year 7 English are studying Media and Advertising. Our resident artists had to recreate the logos of these famous brands without cheating and looking them up online.
DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY
The senior students have started their introductory skills project, a table tennis bat.
Students can select from a variety of veneers to attach to each face of their bat. Veneer is very tricky to cut so the solution is to strengthen it with packaging tape. This can be seen in the photo below.

Year 8 students are working with sheet brass to make a textured ring. The raw material can be seen in the photo below. Students are using typical metal jewellery making processes such as silver soldering and annealing.

Annealing is the term for heating up metal so it becomes soft and easier to manipulate with pliers. The brass strip is bent into a D shape and the ends must touch neatly so that the solder will make a good joint.

WELLBEING

PBL
This week was a rewarding week for PBL within the school as the token system, initiated last week, has readily been taken on board by the students.

All year levels have started to build up a bit of a collection but it seems that Year 9, in particular, have been making a positive impact around the school.

Wednesday was a productive day as assemblies were held and the token system was explained again to students. This was followed by a PBL meeting where students were invited to attend and discuss ways to improve the school.

A positive discussion was had, with teachers feeling that the students involved articulated themselves well. Moving forward, these meetings will be one of several forums in which student voice will be heard and put into positive effect throughout the school.

A COVID 19 UPDATE FROM THE ACT CHIEF HEALTH OFFICER,
DR KERRYN COLEMAN

Please see a COVID-19 update to our school community as well as some further advice below from the Education Directorate about COVID-19 safety measures in our schools.  You can also watch Dr Coleman in her video message on the Directorates Facebook page.

COVID-19 safety measures in ACT public schools and mask wearing advice
By now you and your family should have settled back into Term 3. While COVID-19 continues to cause some uncertainty in our community our schools and the Directorate are working hard to ensure students continue to access high quality learning regardless of the public health situation.

Please read the short update on safety measures in our schools below.

ACT Public Schools COVID-19 Management Plan for Term 3
The Education Directorate has updated its ACT Public Schools COVID-19 Management Plan for Term 3.
The Plan has been reviewed in consultation with ACT Health.

Your school will communicate with you if your child is affected. This includes any changes to how they will access their learning (if learning from home) and what that will look like, including for how long.

A reminder about mask wearing

Masks remain an important measure to stop the spread of COVID-19 in our community and in our schools. Alongside other COVID Smart behaviours, masks can help reduce transmission of COVID-19 respiratory illnesses in our schools.

Students in years 7-12 continue to be encouraged to wear a mask at school when in crowded indoors environments and where physical distancing can’t be maintained.

Staff and visitors to schools must also wear a mask indoors when physical distancing can’t be maintained.

The Directorate, through your school will keep you updated over the Term.

For more information read the updated ACT Public Schools COVID-19 Management Plan  available on the Directorate’s website.

ACT Health has developed an online resource on acute respiratory infections in children which you are encouraged to read.

Thank you once more for your ongoing support.

EDUCATION DIRECTORATE NOTICES

INSURANCE COVER REMINDER
The ACT Education Directorate does not provide any insurance cover for injury, disease or illness to students resulting from school activities or school-organised excursions. Claims for compensation are met where there is a legal liability to do so. Liability is not automatic and depends on the circumstances in which any injury, disease or illness was sustained.

As there is no automatic insurance cover for personal injury if your child is injured at school or during a school organised activity/excursion you should therefore consider whether taking out personal insurance cover for your child is warranted.

This insurance might cover contingencies including medical/hospital expenses, ambulance transport outside the ACT, and cancellation of transport/accommodation or loss of/damage to luggage. The ACT Ambulance Service provides free ambulance transport for students who are injured or suddenly become ill at school or during an approved school organised activity within the ACT.

Calwell High School collects information about injuries and incidents which occur at school or on school-organised activities, on behalf of the ACT Education and Training Directorate. Some of the information may be personal information as defined in the Privacy Act 1988 and the Health Records (Privacy and Access) Act 1997. The information is usually included in a Student Accident/Incident Report or Notification of a Critical Incident together with any accompanying witness statements.

The purposes for which the information is collected include notifying the Territory’s insurers and legal advisers of injuries and incidents and ensuring that the school itself has accurate and complete records.

The Directorate usually provides the form and any other information relevant to the accident/incident to the ACT Insurance Authority and the ACT Government Solicitor. Information may also be provided to WorkSafe ACT in accordance with the ACT Work Health and Safety Act 2011.

Schools have a duty of care to keep students safe. Where an injury or incident occurs schools have an obligation to determine what has happened and therefore may question students. Schools may also ask students to make statements in writing and to sign these statements.
