WHAT'S HAPPENING?
WEEK 1

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Welcome to Term 3 and I hope all of our families have had an enjoyable break! In my first week as Principal of this great school I was so proud to welcome our students back on Monday morning with Year Assemblies, where it was good to see so many young people happy to be onsite after a disrupted Term 2.

Our students have a had a wonderful week and have adjusted incredibly well to the altered timetable. The longer lessons have enabled teachers and students to dive deeper into concepts and has also provided valuable time to further develop the important relationships in our community. We have been incredibly impressed with the students cooperation in ensuring mobile phones are ‘Off and Away’ during learning time, limiting the impact that they can have on focus and concentration.

We are greatly looking forward to the term ahead, with many exciting events planned, including our Athletics Carnival. More information will be provided in next week’s What’s Happening, but our PE staff are already busy planning a fun day.

Have a great weekend.

Steve

FACULTY NEWS

YEAR 7 HaSS
This term, Year 7 have transitioned from studying History to Geography. They began the term by learning about the water cycle and the earth's resources.

Below are some incredible pictures of the paper plate water cycles they created in one lesson.

WELLBEING

PBL
The acknowledgement system is now in effect around the school. Students who are seen doing the right thing such as walking sensibly to class in the corridor and looking after the shared spaces will be presented with a token.

Students then take this token to the front office, when they have a chance, and drop it into their year-level box. Once the tokens within the box reach a certain level then students in that year group will be rewarded. It seems we are already off to a good start after only one day!

HOMEWORK CLUB
Come one, come all to the fantastic opportunity that is Homework Club!

At Calwell High we aim to make sure students are supported with opportunities to catch up on classwork and assessment tasks, as well as provide a space for students to seek assistance from our fantastic teachers.

One of these opportunities is Homework Club, hosted in our school Library. On Monday afternoons from 3.00–4.30pm and Wednesdays Break 2 from 12.50–1.30pm, students have the option to come to the Library to get additional tutoring and assistance from teachers, who volunteer their time to provide students with additional support with their learning.

Sometimes, a student may not need help, but would like make the choice to work in a dedicated space for learning. Just having a space to work productively without distractions can make a huge difference to learning.

P&C NEWS

Hello everyone. For me, it’s an honour to be associated with Calwell High School P&C as its President. Our grandson is a student at the school and we look forward to our time with the P&C as we help to support the school and its community.

I’m a retiree, having worked for Telstra for 35 years and now enjoying more family time and the opportunity to work in various ways to support the community around us. Helping to support and preserve the rural history of the Canberra region, and to also spread the positive messages about protecting and preserving our natural environment, continue to be particularly rewarding projects for me.

Please feel free to get in touch with me via info@calwellhs.act.edu.au for any P&C matters, and if you can help the P&C in some way.

Cheers

Geoff Puleston, President

PISA 2022

PISA is coming to our school! Our school is participating in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), which is taking place in Australian between 18 July–9 September.

PISA is an important part of the National Assessment Program in Australia, which is the measure through which governments, education authorities and schools can determine whether or not young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes. All Australian Education Ministers have agreed to Australian schools’ participation in PISA, which is reflected in the Australian Education Act 2013.

International assessments provide a wide range of valuable information for education policy and review in Australia and overseas and also enable Australia to consider the performance of our education system compared with others.

Since the first PISA assessment involving 32 countries in 2000, the survey has continued to raise interest amongst educators and policy-makers world-wide.  In 2022, Australia will be one of over 85 countries participating in PISA with around 15,000 students (from around 800 schools) representing our country.

What will PISA mean for our school?
A random sample of 15-year-olds, mostly from Years 10 and 11, will complete a two-hour computer-based assessment consisting of mathematics, science, reading and creative thinking. These students will also be asked to complete a questionnaire.

A random sample of teachers will be asked to complete an online questionnaire which will collect information on classroom instruction, teachers’ educational backgrounds, training, and teaching experiences.

As an international assessment, every participating school and student has an important role in showing the rest of the world what Australia can do. ACER will provide our school and participating students with a certificate, recognising our contribution. Each student will also receive access to the Insight video series.

Date of Assessment: 28 July 2022
