WEEK 10

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

The end of term has raced around and we are delighted to reflect on our progress over the past ten weeks. Students and staff have been engaged in more extra curricular activity than any other time in the past few years and the many excursions, performances and events have produced great learning and highlighted the diversity and talent within Calwell High School.

On Monday we were extremely pleased to host the AFP Cyber Safety Team as they led all students through the ThinkuKnow presentation. This session educated students on safe online practices to protect against exploitation and social media pitfalls.

I was also delighted to attend the Theodore Primary School Learning Journey on Wednesday afternoon, where I spent some time speaking to the Year 5 and 6 students. It was great to hear how excited they are to join the Calwell High School community in 2023. We will continue to meet with our incoming students throughout Term 4 as a part of their transition into high school.

Thank you to everyone in the Calwell High School community for a great term. We are confident next term will be even better! Have a safe break and we look forward to seeing everyone at our Parent Teacher Evening on Thursday of Week 1.

Steve

ACTIVITIES & EVENTS

TAIKO DRUMMING
Students studying Japanese at Calwell recently had a hands-on chance to try out one of Japan’s more dynamic cultural exports – Taiko drumming. Kiyomi Sensei, a visiting Taiko expert, taught the students the importance of a positive attitude, good posture and teamwork for successful drum playing.

Calwell students excelled at picking up the 8-beat rhythms quickly while rotating around and sharing the variety of drums. It was a great opportunity for our students and we hope to expand these offerings as the Japanese program at Calwell grows in the coming years.

FACULTY NEWS

LSU
Students have been studying turtles this term, as we enjoy our class turtle Fred’s new home in a more central location in the school.

We’ve done water sampling to see what conditions he needs to thrive, and we’ve looked at the organ systems of humans and compared them to those of a turtle.

This will all culminate in an informational website that we’re building about Fred, so anyone who is interested in Long-Necked turtles can find out whatever they want to know!

The school community is encouraged to visit Fred at the LSU window (but not tap on the glass!).
YEAR 8 ENGLISH
In their English classes, Year 8 students have been engaging with a thematic study surrounding the theme of Hope, and how it can be displayed using illustrative and visual devices like juxtaposition, contrast, symbolism and many more techniques.

The Year 8 English teachers have been blown way by the depth and effort put into their final pieces, and the information that they have explained in their oral presentations about their compositions.
TEXTILES
Students in Year 9/10 Textiles have worked hard this term, including making cushions and a tool belt for their dads for Father’s Day using old denim jeans.
PHOTOGRAPHY – FAKECATIONS!
Year 9/10 Photography have been refining their editing and composition skills through an in-class ‘fakecation’ project.

The class had to first select a holiday destination as their background. Then, using editing software, they used posed pictures from a recent photoshoot at school to place themselves in their chosen destination.

We are seeing some excellent work in this class from our talented photographers.

P&C NEWS

Hello Parents, Carers and Friends, with Term 3 wrapping up, the P&C would like to take the opportunity to sincerely thank all the teachers and support staff at Calwell High, together with the school leadership team, for their dedication, hard work and commitment that has consistently shone through in all that they have achieved for the benefit of our great group of young people at the school.

Well done! We look forward to Term 4 and the opportunities for the P&C to continue to support and encourage the school in a positive and productive way. Everyone is welcome at our regular P&C meetings, where you can meet our Principal Steve Collins and his team, also to hear about how the P&C supports the school.

The next meeting will be in Week 4 Term 4. Details will be in the next newsletter.

Cheers and best wishes Geoff Puleston, P&C President
