WEEK 1

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Welcome back to Term 2. I see this term as a time to reflect on Term 1, set goals and aim for growth. As we embark on this new term, we have the opportunity to embrace opportunities for personal and academic development.

On Wednesday, our school came together for an important Anzac Day commemoration led by our student leaders. It was a moment of reflection, where we honoured the sacrifices made by those who have served and continue to serve our country. During this time, we also discussed the vital role of peacekeepers in our armed services and how their values can be echoed in our daily lives at school. It was a reminder of the importance of kindness, compassion, and grace in our interactions with one another.

Speaking of which, I want to extend my gratitude to all the students who consistently support one another with kindness and understanding. Your actions, whether big or small, contribute to the positive atmosphere that makes our school community so special. Let's continue to lead with empathy and make a difference in each other's lives every day.

I also want to take a moment to acknowledge the responsible behaviour demonstrated by the majority of our students regarding our Mobile Phone Device procedures. Compliance with these guidelines not only fosters a focused learning environment but also demonstrates maturity and accountability.

Trish

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES

ANZAC DAY ASSEMBLY
On Wednesday 1 May our school community marked the occasion of ANZAC day with a ceremony during the assembly. There was strong sense of reflection in the air and students respectfully listened to student presenters (Charlie, Ella and Gus) as they discussed  the history of the day, read a poem and completed wreath laying ceremony. Our Principal, Trish, spoke to the school community about the important role of peacekeepers across the globe.
BOYS NRL ALAN TONGUE 9s COMPETITION
Yesterday we saw two teams head out to Curtin Playing Fields to represent our school at the NRL Alan Tongue 9s Competition.

Our juniors were up against some very tough competition, unable to get a win on the board. Despite suffering a heavy loss first up against St Edmund’s, and then going down in a closer match against Mackillop, they rallied and were very unlucky lose in the final minute against Karabar. The boys showed grit and resilience and should hold their heads up high for the way they represented Calwell. Congratulations to Conan V who was overwhelmingly voted Player’s Player and Neven R who was awarded the Coaches’ Award.
The seniors had a much tighter competition, winning their first game against Karabar, before narrowly losing to Mackillop in a very close encounter. With only three teams in our pool, a win and a loss saw us finish second and into the semi finals to play the top of the other pool, St Edmund’s. They proved to be tough competition, but the boys kept it closer than the opposition expected and should be proud of their efforts.

Our last game was a third place play off which saw us come up against Mackillop again. Unfortunately, with our numbers dwindling due to injuries and fatigue, we were unable to keep up and lost – finishing fourth overall in the U16s Division. All the boys should be very proud of this result and the courage and determination they demonstrated throughout the day. Congratulations to Eric V who was voted Player’s Player and Ali K who was awarded the Coaches’ Award.

We’re looking forward to putting in the work and coming back bigger and better for future competitions later this year.

FACULTY UPDATES

ON COUNTRY LEARNING
On Country Learning for 2024 has begun with the perfect blue sky Autumn day on beautiful Ngunnawal Country once again. Our day started off with a yarn outside in the sun starting with an Acknowledgement and moving to an overview of the term and an introduction to the program.

We completed some team building activities and moved onto lunch where our students cooked and cleaned for themselves. We finished the afternoon by building fires, learning about risk and cooking some damper over the coals. What a wonderful way to start term. Plenty more to come!

For 20 plus years, Menslink have provided free counselling to young guys throughout Canberra and the surrounding region.

If your young guy is having a hard time and could really use someone to talk to, get in touch with Menslink. Now conveniently located in Holder (with some sessions also available at Kippax & Lanyon), our wait times are currently low so we’re ready to help when he needs it.

Our Counselling sessions are completely confidential and are available to any male aged 10-25. There are no fees or charges or limits to the number of sessions. You don’t need a mental health plan and we are available during school terms and school holidays. The only prerequisite is that he is willing to give it a try.
