WEEK 8

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

I greatly enjoyed getting out to Birrigai on Thursday to see our extremely excited Year 7 students on their first day of Year 7 Camp. These events are so important for our students and after the disruptions of the past few years, we are so pleased to be able to provide these experiences again. The Year 7s will forge memories from this camp that will stay with them forever. Even old, bald principals have extremely fond memories of their own Year 7 camp - many years later!

I was extremely proud this week to meet with students and share the plan to trial our Flexible Learning Time for Wednesday afternoons next term. This is largely in response to student feedback and we are so excited for our students to be so involved in playing an active role in shaping the future of our school. Additionally, it is so pleasing to be trialling an initiative that is one of the first of its kind in the ACT.

Next week our attention shifts to Showcase as our talented artists will be performing for us on Wednesday and Thursday. It is an event not to be missed as the talent of our students never ceases to amaze us. Be sure to get along for an entertaining event!

Have a great weekend.

Steve

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

NRL CANBERRA CUP RUGBY LEAGUE GALA DAY
We are thrilled to share the exciting highlights from our recent Rugby League Gala day at the NRL Canberra Cup for the U15s on Tuesday 6 June.

Despite some of our students being U13 age, our team displayed remarkable strength and determination throughout the day. In our first game against Chisholm, our players showcased their skills and managed to score an impressive try.

The second game proved to be more challenging against SFX, resulting in a scoreless match and a few unfortunate injuries. Nevertheless, our students demonstrated great sportsmanship and perseverance, leaving us immensely proud. We applaud their efforts and look forward to more thrilling matches in the future.

FACULTY UPDATES

WOOD/METAL TECHNOLOGY
Our Year 9/10 students are working hard on a couple of different projects. In the first photo, students are adding their finishing touches to their metal toolbox project using pop rivets and scrap metal.

In the second photo, students are working hard in the metalwork room using the lathes to make their future car gear shifting knobs.
SCIENCE
Last week, our Year 9 students engaged in experiments looking at the different chemical reactions involving acids, bases, metals, and salts. This week they will complete their research report on radioactive isotopes.

Special thanks to Aki for her assistance.

Science facts:
  • Chemical reactions occur because electrons are shared or transferred from one substance to another.
  • Many radioisotopes are used in the diagnosis and treatments of many diseases.
  • In 1896, Henri Becquerel used naturally fluorescent minerals to study the properties of x-rays. This in turn led to the discovery of radioactivity.
ON COUNTRY LEARNING
In On Country Learning this week, our students had a fulfilling day with hands-on activities and engaging discussions. They honed their camping skills by practicing tent setup and packing, as well as exploring the safe use of trangias for cooking. They even got to savour the deliciousness of noodles cooked on these portable stoves.

Additionally, our young adventurers enthusiastically delved into trip planning, creating packing lists, and discussing safety and timeframes. The day was made even more meaningful as they took the time to learn and reflect on the qualities of rocks and water, discovering how these traits can be applied in their day-to-day lives. It was a rewarding experience that fostered practical skills, environmental awareness, and personal growth.

Mr Rodriguez
LSU SCIENCE
The Year 7/8 students investigated the adhesion and cohesion of water by conducting a simple experiment. Their task was to use a beaker, a pipette, a 5 cent coin and water.

The students observed how many single water droplets they could fit onto the 5 cent coin before it over flowed and the surface tension broke. Our record was over 30 droplets!
Students in year 9/10 decided to investigate the Ph levels of different commonly used substances as a part of our ongoing chemistry study. We mixed Universal Indicator with a range of substances such as milk, soap, detergent, vinegar, water and more.

After the universal indicator was mixed with each substance, a colour change occurred to reveal either its acidity, neutrality or alkalinity. We discovered some interesting results and had fun observing the sudden changes in colour!

CHESS CLUB
After the finals, the winners will be awarded prizes in Week 9 Wednesday Break 2 at 1.30pm in B23.

Chess fun facts
  1. There are more than 300 billion ways to start the first 4 moves of the chess game.
  2. There are more possible chess moves than there are atoms in the entire universe.

P&C NEWS

Hello Parents, Carers and Friends

The Teapot has landed! - courtesy of the Griffith University / ACT Government Leaf Collective initiative. Our P&C is very proud to be part of this project. The teapot is a giant leaf basket and will be filled progressively by our students with fallen tree leaves from around the CHS grounds.

Eventually becoming mulch for the edible food garden and other gardens around the school, leaves are also being 'kept off the streets' as part of our contribution to maintaining healthy waterways in our area - a very worthwhile environmental activity for all of us. Next time you’re at the school, check out the teapot.

Huge thanks go to the 20 P&C members, staff and students who came along to help at last Friday’s working bee for the Greening Calwell High School project. This time we concentrated our efforts on the edible garden beds at the western end of the school, and some other plantings at the front of the school - and we got a lot done in a short time. The pizzas afterwards were pretty good too!

A friendly reminder for our next P&C general meeting on Wednesday 28 June at 6.00pm in the CHS main staff room. All welcome (particularly grandparents! – please pass the word).

Cheers, Geoff Puleston, Calwell High School P&C President

All were relieved to make it back to earth safely and everyone had a greater understanding of the dangers when working at heights, well done!

MAKER2MARKET BUSINESS TASTER EXPERIENCE

Maker2Market business Taster experience is a three-day deep dive for creative teens (aged 10-17) into creating a micro-business and selling handmade products to real customers at Old Bus Depot Markets, Kingston, ACT.

Over 500 teens have tried the Maker2Market three-day Taster program - it's a fun learning experience (based on design thinking methodology) that grows entrepreneurial mindset, problem-solving, curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, perseverance, and social skills.

A great introduction to the innovation life-cycle of designing, prototyping, making, and testing. Importantly, the skills learned through this real-world experience enable creative teens to be entrepreneurial and start to earn their own money doing what they love!

Teens completing the program are also given a 12-month pass to enable them to attend commercial markets and other opportunities to further their entrepreneurial skills and start-up businesses.
