WEEK 2

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Another busy week of learning and engagement for our students this week. This was highlighted by the Year 10 Excursion to Sydney, where our students were able to see many of the city’s great cultural and tourist locations, including the Botanical Gardens and Taronga Park Zoo. I understand there were some very tired students at the end of each evening (which pleased the staff immensely).

I also greatly enjoyed spending time in Mr O’Brien’s Year 8 English class, where students were introduced to the term of genres, and more specifically, Mystery fiction. It was great to see the students so engaged in a range of learning modes and Mr O’Brien’s great relationships with the students enabled everyone to have the confidence to contribute to the classroom activities.

As a part of our commitment to hearing student voice, last term our students completed a survey to provide feedback on a range of topics, including homework and our Aspire (Pastoral Care) timeslot. Feedback indicated that many of our students would like to reconsider the length of our weekly Aspire lesson and would also appreciate some dedicated school time to work independently on homework and assessment items. This is an area we will be looking to explore further in coming weeks to best support the learning needs of our students.

Our students have been training hard in PE and we are looking forward to the Cross Country Carnival this Thursday. These events are always great at Calwell High School and I am sure we will have some staff and students competing for the medals!

SIGNING OUT
Please be reminded that students are not permitted to leave the school grounds during the school day. Students attending appointments or leaving with parents can be signed out at the front office. We cannot grant permission for students to leave the school grounds to attend the shops or for other non essential activities.

Have a great weekend.

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

CALWELL CLIMBING CREW
Term 2 has kicked off with a great turn out of primarily Year 10’s coming to have a climb on our indoor climbing wall. With some regulars and Outdoor Ed students in the mix, there was some fantastic mentoring and peer support between students.

A few climbers made it to the top of the wall and a few students helped out their mates by being their belayers as climbing wasn’t their thing. Looking forward to Week 4’s Calwell Climbing Crew.

FACULTY OVERVIEWS

MATHS TERM 2
Welcome back to what will be a very busy term for our students in Maths during term 2.  In term 1 we saw some great progress being made by the vast majority of our students.

The fantastic Numeracy Program being implemented by the immensely talented Ms Sehgal has seen those students come leaps and bounds as they progress through their program. Core classes have also seen some outstanding results emerge through hard work and dedication.

It was with great sadness that we had to say ‘Goodbye’ to Ms Emma Streeter at the end of term 1, who took up her dream opportunity leading a special maths program at Lyneham Primary School.  She will be missed but we wish her all the best in her new endeavour.

This term we welcome back Mr Plenty who has returned after some well-earned long service leave during term 1.  He is mostly taking on Ms Streeter’s classes and will also return to his role with the 10A Advanced Maths class.

As we work our way through our new units of work it is so important to keep up the hard work and finish what has been set to the students highest standard.  As always EP will be extensively used and all work will be posted on Google Classroom.

If you have any questions regarding your child’s progress, please don’t hesitate to make contact with their teacher.  They are all extremely committed to the progress of your child and will help wherever they can.  It is also timely to remind students to bring their working/charged Chromebook to each and every lesson.  If they are experiencing any issues with their Chromebook please make contact with the school the Front Office or with our ITO alexander.tandy@ed.act.edu.au .

Term 2 Core Maths Program by Year
Year 7:  Unit 3 – Probability 1, Unit 4 - Probability 2
Year 8: Unit 3 – Time, Unit 4 - Data and Statistics
Year 9: Unit 3 – Linear Equations, Unit 4 – Linear Relationships
Year 10:  Unit 3 – Non-Linear Equations, Unit 4 – Non-Linear Relationships

OUTDOOR EDUCATION TERM 2
After a great first term focusing on marine habitats, water and safety, snorkelling and the beautiful Jervis Bay, Outdoor Ed is now focussing on getting our heads around roping systems, abseiling, cave formations and caving. We are looking forward to exploring Wee Jasper and it’s surrounds (caves and cliffs) on our camp in week 5.

On Monday and over the next couple of weeks, we will be practising our abseiling before we really put ourselves to the test with a 30 m cliff on camp. In the photos students are practising their attachments and safety systems with a horizontal abseil first, we then graduate to abseiling from the bridge and can adjust the abseiling height by moving the system further up or down the overpass.

Students are responsible for the gear checks, assisting the setup, pack up and partner checks which certainly keeps them busy. Looking forward to another great term with Outdoor Ed at Calwell High School.

ARTS & LANGUAGES TERM 2
The Arts and Languages faculty has been buzzing with energy already as we look forward to a busy Term 2.

Drama
In Drama, a new Year 7 group was welcomed to create tableaux scenes (freeze frames), develop characters and draw storyboards to create and document short scripts. The Year 8 class will learn more about creating tension and focus on stage and will explore how the elements of Drama work together in performance. The Year 9/10 will workshop ideas in class to develop a performance piece to audition for  this year's Showcase.
Music
In Music, the year 7s have already started learning some piano and guitar and are choosing their pieces ready for the end of term performances. The 9/10s have hit the ground running also with the Origins class exploring some composition techniques, the Battle of the bands class…

Dance
Our Dance classes have been working hard, leading into a busy term of performances. Our 7/8 Dance classes have been getting creative, composing their own dance pieces that explore different genres of dance. All classes have also started their class dance pieces which will go towards our annual end of Semester 1 Showcase performance. It will be a fun filled night celebrating the achievements of our Dance, Music and Drama students. Keep an eye out for more information, details coming soon

Art
In Art, a new group of year 7s have begun the exciting journey through the 7 elements of art. The year 8s have started planning and building their breakout arms; arms that look like they are breaking through the wall into the classroom. The year 9/10s have chosen an artist to analyse and have been busy collecting work and planning their creations. In Graphic Design the year 8s have started looking at advertising and are working towards creating their own advertisements. Finally, in Digital Art the 9/10s have started exploring the exciting world of 3D computer graphics through the program Blender.

Photography
Our photography students are continuing to refine their skills with a range of settings on our Digital Cameras, and manipulate their images to communicate key ideas. We are seeing excellent collaboration in small group work and experimentation with lighting and colour in particular. The class are making the most of the autumn trees surrounding the school, capturing the change of seasons in an artistic way.

Japanese
In Japanese, year 7 has begun the term with a film study of Studio Ghibli’s award-winning anime Ponyo. Year 8 Japanese Culture had a successful lesson cooking Okonomiyaki. Year 9/10 Japanese are practising how to perform well in a Japanese-only interview situation, which is a handy thing to master in any language.

ON COUNTRY LEARNING WEEK 1
Last week we had a phenomenal start to our inaugural On Country Learning program. We started the morning with an in language Acknowledgement of Country and a chat about what the next 10 weeks will hopefully look like. We then moved into a classroom setting where we learnt a bit about SMART goals and the students set 2 goals, one for the school setting and one for the program.

Students prepared, cooked and cleaned their own BBQ for lunch and then we headed out and on to beautiful Ngunnawal country for some fire building and damper cooking. Students worked in teams to safely build their own fires with a competition for best fire. Once we had a good bed of coals, the damper dough was bought out and we all sat around the fire cooking our damper talking about what we did in the holidays. A fantastic day spent with friends and peers.

ON COUNTRY LEARNING WEEK 2
This week, the On Country Learning program was taken to new heights with the day culminating in a crate climbing challenge. The lead involved students discussing and focussing on what it meant to be part of a team.

We started with a Team Rescue activity where students had to work together in teams to problem solve and navigate their way through the Kosciusko alpine environment (obstacle course), without trampling and damaging the vulnerable Sphagnum moss (the tanbark), the native habitat of the endangered Corroboree frog. Teams had to complete the course whilst ensuring the safety of the Corroboree frog (soft toy) that was placed in their charge.

After successfully completing the challenges, we headed inside for a bit of warmth and respite from the wind and rain. Here we reflected on the Team Rescue activity and discussed what being part of a team means, what a team can look like and different ways you can contribute to your team and it’s goal(s).

Again, students were in charge of preparing, cooking and cleaning the BBQ for their lunch. Our final activity for the day was the crate climbing challenge. With an incredible break in the weather and the sun shining, students worked together to their collective strengths to support, encourage and motivate each other through both the climbing AND the building of the crate stacks.

Comfort zones were exceeded, support and communication was at an all-time high, and many laughs were had by both staff and students alike. We are all already looking forward to next week’s activities.

MATHS & SCIENCE
Teaching is fun.
Students took a leadership role and used ‘teacher voice’ while teaching maths and science to their fellow students.

A rule of mathematics states, if it seems easy, you’re doing something wrong.

The following Maths students solved ‘problems’ which they had not seen previously:

Exponents and Index Law

ACT SPACE EXPLORATION PROGRAM 19-23 JUNE 2023
Are you a student in Years 10 to 12 in an ACT public school that has a passion for space?  The ACT is positioned to be Australia's space capital, leading the nation in its development and testing of space technologies generating vast amounts of digital images and data of Earth.

Earth observation technologies allows researchers and organisations to monitor and manage the Earth's natural resources, tackle the effects of climate change, and develop models to better understand catastrophic events.

We invite you to learn more about the jobs of the future by attending our inaugural space industry work exploration event.  You will meet industry leaders, experts in their fields, skilled workers, researchers and graduate students who are all contributing, in their unique way, to this growing sector here in the ACT.

Throughout the week, you will be challenged to participate in a 'work exploration' project, guided by field experts, to solve a climate change problem that can only be resolved by using data that has been collected by satellites, many of which were engineered and built locally.   As this week is all about careers, you will also have a range of guest speakers share their career pathway stories and the opportunities to work in their industry.
Complete your application before 12 May 2023

P&C NEWS

Hello Parents, Carers, and Friends
In between our advertised P&C working bees for the “Greening Calwell High” project, P&C members have been working with students on a number of Friday afternoons now to help beautify the grounds around the school.

Under the guidance of teacher Francis Ventura, and with the help of P&C members, the leadership and activities class have done some great work at the front of the school. The corner garden outside the CPAC has been weeded, mulched and tidied up and now looks a treat, with other areas to follow.

The other improvements “out front”, such as clearing the nature strip on Casey Cres, clearing around the entrance signage etc are also steadily adding value to the appearance of the school. So please have a look when you come to the school and see what the students have achieved.

There is much more to do of course, but we’re on a roll, and the P&C welcomes any parents (and grandparents) who would like to help us in this very worthwhile initiative. Just send me an email and I’ll get back in touch straight away.

Cheers, Geoff Puleston, Calwell High School P&C President
