WHAT'S HAPPENING?
WEEK 1

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

This was a fantastic and busy Week 1, with so many diverse activities happening. This included our Anzac Day Assembly, where we received a moving address from former Calwell student and now Warrant Officer 2, in the Australian Army, Christopher Mapstone. Christopher highlighted the importance of knowing that Calwell High School is a learning environment that regularly produces young people that go on to excel in their chosen field. It prompted us all to consider what great things our current cohort will go on to achieve.

We also enjoyed Parent Teacher Night on Thursday evening, with a great opportunity to discuss student achievement in class, and consider strategies for further success. This term we trialled a 3.30–6.30pm timeslot, with seven minute interviews. We would welcome feedback from families on how this model worked and encourage you to email your comments to info@calwellhs.act.edu.au.

Our ‘On Country Learning’ class also started this week, with students spending the time enjoying the beautiful surrounds of Birrigai, as they deeply engaged in setting SMART goals for their learning at school. The student feedback was amazing and we look forward to seeing them reach new heights with Mr Rodriguez, both in their Outdoor Ed activities and their learning!

I also enjoyed getting into some classrooms this week, in particular the Women in Construction class, where students were actively designing their future houses using digital designing software. It was great to see the enthusiasm that was being displayed in Ms Lum’s classroom!

2024 Year 7 Coordinator - Mr Dati, Mr Ricky, and myself have spent some time at our three cluster Primary Schools over the past couple of weeks. It has been great to get to know the Year 6s, as we start to prepare them for their transition to high school in 2024. Just a reminder to families that we will be holding our Information Night on Tuesday 23 May at 5.30pm.

We are very much looking forward to the Year 10 Camp next week, where students will be visiting a range of cultural and tourist locations in and around Sydney. A special thanks to Mr Bradley for the mountain of work he has put in to making sure this excursion has been able to happen.

Have a great weekend.

Steve

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

AHLETICS CARNIVAL
The athletics carnival, last term in Week 10, was a huge success with Freeman taking out first place (again). We were blessed with warm sunny weather which contributed to the wonderful atmosphere.

Students and staff alike joined in with the events as well as Mr Ricky for moral support. Student participation was fantastic with plenty of track and field events throughout the day to spectate or be a part of. A huge thanks to the PE team and staff for such a successful day.
ANZAC DAY ASSEMBLY
This week, Calwell High commemorated ANZAC Day with a whole-school assembly.

We were honoured to welcome Warrant Officer Christopher Mapstone of the Australian Army, a former student from the class of 1996, as our Guest of Honour. He delivered a inspirational address about the ANZAC spirit.

Thank you to our wonderful students who led the service. Gus and Sarah for serving as MCs, Ella for the Acknowledgement of Country, Isaak and Sally for reading poems, Dominic for laying the wreath, as well as Samuel, Brielle, Lily, Ar-yhen, Jayden and Alex for assistance with logistics. These students did the ANZAC Spirit proud.

Sally’s beautiful poem, which she wrote herself, can be read below.

Lest We Forget.
Sally’s Poem:

In the trenches,
Life is a test,
Where soldiers must be their best,

They fear the bombs that fall like rain,
The mud that drags them down in pain.

The battle cries ring through the night,
As bullets whistle with their might,

Lives are lost with every blast,
As death approaches all too fast.

In the trenches,
There is no rest,
Only chaos and constant stress,

The stench of death is in the air,
Soldiers fighting with courage rare.

In these dark and hellish places,
Men fight with grim and hardened faces,

Each day a struggle to survive,
To keep hope and love alive.

With every day that they endure,
Their bond with each other grows more pure,

Brothers in arm,
Fighters to the end,
In the trenches,
They must depend.

On each other,
They stand tall,
Defending their country,
Giving their all,

Their courage shines in the face of fear,
In the trenches,
They persevere.

For those who served so brave and true,
Our hearts and gratitude are due,

For they endured the harshest test,
In the trenches,
They gave their best.
GAME ON CANBERRA
During the holidays, superstar students Sally, Lucy, Isaak and Callum joined the Education Minister to launch the Physical Activity Foundation’s ‘Game On Canberra’ series. Our students will be helping to facilitate the series in Calwell, which kicks off at 10.00am at the TNA Netball Courts. It is free and fun and all are welcome! View the story here:

ACT SPACE EXPLORATION PROGRAM 26-30 JUNE 2023
Are you a student in Years 10 to 12 in an ACT public school that has a passion for space?  The ACT is positioned to be Australia's space capital, leading the nation in its development and testing of space technologies generating vast amounts of digital images and data of Earth.

Earth observation technologies allows researchers and organisations to monitor and manage the Earth's natural resources, tackle the effects of climate change, and develop models to better understand catastrophic events.

We invite you to learn more about the jobs of the future by attending our inaugural space industry work exploration event.  You will meet industry leaders, experts in their fields, skilled workers, researchers and graduate students who are all contributing, in their unique way, to this growing sector here in the ACT.

Throughout the week, you will be challenged to participate in a 'work exploration' project, guided by field experts, to solve a climate change problem that can only be resolved by using data that has been collected by satellites, many of which were engineered and built locally.   As this week is all about careers, you will also have a range of guest speakers share their career pathway stories and the opportunities to work in their industry.

YOUNG INDIGENOUS WOMEN'S STEM ACADEMY CSIRO APPLICATIONS OPEN
I am pleased to announce that applications are open in your area for the Young Indigenous Women’s STEM Academy. The Academy is a fantastic opportunity for young Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander women who have an interest and aspirations in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

We are currently recruiting young women in Years 8, 10 and 11 who attend schools in regional NSW and ACT.  All Academy activities are completed outside of school hours, will compliment what they are learning at school and there is no cost for students to be involved.

The Academy provides a holistic, streamlined approach improving young women’s access to STEM opportunities and careers. CSIRO works with students until Year 12 when they are then transitioned to Career Trackers who will support Academy students through university.

The program has been designed to combine STEM extension activities and individualised support for participants.  An important part of the work that we do when a student joins the academy is building a strong and respectful relationship with the school community so together, we can work alongside the young women and their families into the future.
