WEEK 7

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Our school grounds are certainly looking fantastic this year with the extra rain and subsequent growth in the trees at the back of the school that were so thoughtfully planted.

The P.A.R.T.Y. Program visited and presented to Year 10 students on Tuesday. This program is always thought provoking and well received by students. Thanks to the Wellbeing team for organising this experience for our students. Year 10 will soon, in week 10 this term, have the opportunity to participate in the annual delivery of Road Ready.

Some of our wonderful Learning Support Assistants, Patrick O’Dea and Abbey Crampton, are on their University Placements as upcoming teachers. It is certainly exciting to think that these educators will be entering the teaching profession as fully trained teachers in the near future.

Wishing all a lovely long weekend.

Megan

PREVENT ALCOHOL AND RISK-RELATED TRAUMA IN YOUTH PROGRAM

Our Year 10 cohort were involved in the Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth (P.A.R.T.Y.) Program this week at school.

As part of the session, students were educated about risks and choices they’ll be faced with as teenagers venturing into young adulthood, such as driving under the influence.

Students were given the opportunity to recognise potential injury-producing situations, make prevention-oriented choices and minimise unnecessary risks. While some of the content was challenging, it is timely information given many of the year 10 students will be out driving around on their learners in the near future.

A massive thank you to the P.A.R.T.Y program team at Canberra hospital along with the other representatives from the AFP and ACT Fire & Rescue that were here for the day.
COLD CONDITIONS AT SOUTHSIDE REGIONAL CROSS COUNTRY
On Monday 6 June, 13 students from Calwell braved the cold and windy conditions to compete at the Southside Regional Cross Country event at Stromlo Forest Park.

The recent rain had created a change to the course which meant students were running into a strong head wind, making the conditions even more difficult.

Some notable finishes were Anthony Barker finishing 1st in the region for his age group, and Neven Radosavljevic finishing 2nd for the region in his age group.

Overall, Calwell finished 6th, with nine students qualifying to compete at the ACT Cross Country Championships on Wednesday 15 June. Congratulations to all students who participated!

POSITIVE BEHAVIOURS FOR LEARNING

INTRODUCING POSITIVE BEHAVIOURS FOR LEARNING
Positive behaviours for learning (PBL) is a whole school community initiative that strives to foster a safe, supportive and positive learning environment for the students of the school.

PBL is a framework that helps schools to improve academic, behavioural, emotional and social outcomes for children and young people. Research has proven that, when implemented properly, teachers and students have more time to focus on relationships and quality classroom instruction.

PBL focuses on using positive language in the creation of clear expectations and rules to reinforce positive behaviour within the school environment. For example, students should be walking in a calm and sensitive manner inside rather than running. Instead of framing the expectation as "don't run inside" PBL would use more positive language such as "we walk when inside." The system is then designed to acknowledge and reward the students for fulfilling the expected behaviour with rewards decided on by the school community.

The staff of Calwell High School has decided that PBL, as a framework, is the right fit for our school and is working diligently to find ways to introduce it to students and the community. The school has formed a PBL team headed by our new Deputy Principal, Scott Eastburn, that will meet regularly to discuss and design ways in which PBL can be implemented into the school.

The school's corridors have been identified as a key area for improvement and will be the first place in which PBL is implemented within the school. The PBL team have brainstormed and consulted with students to identify problem behaviours within the corridors that are currently an issue and ways in which PBL can be implemented to address these behaviours.

Four rules framed with positive language were decided upon to help improve corridor issues such as inappropriate noise levels, reckless movement, truancy and disregard for shared spaces.  These rules were:
  • Kind language - Kind volume.
  • Move peacefully - Move purposefully.
  • Right place - Right time.
  • Shared spaces - Shared responsibility.
In essence, the agreed expected behaviours within the corridors amount to students moving calmly and purposefully between their classes whilst utilising appropriate inside voices and respecting their surroundings.

The school has decided that the best way to reward students who are displaying the expected behaviours is by a token system. Each student displaying the expected behaviours in the corridors will be given a token which they then will be able to cash in.

Students will be working in year levels to save up tokens and once a certain level of tokens has been reached then students will be rewarded with a festival Friday where the school hosts fun activities for the year level on the last lesson on a Friday. Specifics of how this will precisely be implemented are still being worked out but the staff here at Calwell High School are excited about this development and feel that the students will be too.

Please see here for more information regarding PBL.
