WEEK 5

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Week 5 has been very successful and was kicked off to a great start by the Week 4 Friday Cross Country Carnival. Well done to all students and staff who participated on the day in whatever capacity, as competitive runners, walkers, photographers and officials.

The resilience of Year 7 is to be commended this week with the Naplan tests being sat by them and a big thanks to Ms Jodi Adams in the coordination of this testing. It is certainly a big job and one that is vital to the running of a modern day Australian school. We welcome another new staff member this week, Sila has joined our wonderful youth worker team, he is sure to be a great asset to support students at Calwell High School.

We are finishing the week with a visit from the Education Minister, Yvette Berry, who will attend our staff morning tea on Friday. Next week we have a Special Purpose Review happening and I thank all the parents and carers who have put their names forward to be part of this important step in Calwell’s improvement journey.

Qualifiers will be announced at school this week with a brief meeting to confirm their entry.

The rest of the school enjoyed a wonderful walk of the track to finish the school week.  There were many laughs, lots of dancing to the beats and generally a great atmosphere as they traversed the track.

INFORMATION NIGHT 2022
It was wonderful to see so many Year 6 students and their families join us on Tuesday night for our Information Night. The evening was a wonderful display of all the great programs and opportunities we have here at Calwell High School. A huge thank you to all the students who volunteered their time and energy to help set up and participate in faculty areas. Your pride and enthusiasm shone through and was an integral part of making the evening such a success.

FACULTY UPDATES

This week most students are beginning their testing phase for their current units of work. As preparation for this, we highly encourage students to consolidate their knowledge by preparing their notebooks and practising questions on EP or the mediums provided by their teachers through Google Classroom. Students are always allowed multiple attempts at these summative assessments so the feedback they receive in between them is important. If you’re not sure what is happening, please check Google Classroom as the first port of call and if you don't find the information you need then please contact your child’s teacher.

COVID UPDATE - CONFIRMED HOUSEHOLD CONTACTS

As a household contact, your child can learn from home. If this is your preferred option please contact your child’s year coordinator. However, if that’s not possible, they can attend school but need to follow the risk mitigation requirements for household contacts that are outlined on the ACT COVID-19 website for a period of 7 days from the last time someone in the household tested positive for COVID-19. These are:
  • Follow the risk mitigation requirements for household contacts on the ACT COVID-19 website
  • Have no symptoms of COVID-19. If they develop COVID-19 symptoms, they should undergo COVID-19 testing and isolate until a negative result is received.
    • If a positive result is returned, they should follow the requirements for people who test positive for COVID-19.
    • If a negative result is returned, and the initial test was a rapid antigen test, it is recommended to have a PCR test and continue to isolate.
    • If a negative result is returned, a household contact should stay at home until their symptoms resolve.
  • Undertake a COVID-19 test 24 hours prior to attending school and then every 48 hours during the time that they are required to follow the risk mitigation requirements.
  • Wear a face mask indoors if they are in Years 7-12.
  • Other exclusions apply for mask wearing requirements, such as if someone has a physical or mental health condition, or disability, which makes wearing a mask unsuitable. For more information, see the ACT COVID-19 website
  • Practice COVID smart strategies related to respiratory hygiene, sanitising hands, maintaining 1.5m distance wherever possible
If a household contact has previously been diagnosed with COVID-19 and received clearance from the self-isolation period in the last 12 weeks, they do not have to comply with these risk mitigation requirements if they subsequently become a household contact. If you have any further questions about what to do if you are a household contact, please refer to www.covid19.act.gov.au.

If you would like to discuss requirements for your child attending schools as an asymptomatic household contact, please contact our front office staff
