WEEK 3

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Welcome to our weekly bulletin where we will share with you what’s happening in our community. Each week we will share information and insights into learning, wellbeing and community events. We welcome feedback on the weekly bulletin, so please email calwellhighschool@ed.act.edu.au. This week we have been focussed on positive behaviours and many of our students have been recognised for this via email Merit Awards, well done to those students.

We have welcomed new staff to Calwell High School this term. Learning Support Assistant Jonte Probyn, Classroom Teachers Joshua Stefanou and Ryan Gowing, Deputy Principal Scott Eastburn and Staffing Officer Leonie O’Loughlan. Steve Collins and Richard Fox have joined us on the Senior Executive for Term 2 along with Helena Williams as Business Support.

We also have some farewells to announce. Natalie Dickie has accepted an opportunity to work as an Instructional Mentor with the ACT Education Directorate, after 27 years as an educator and school leader in a variety of school settings we thank her and wish her well. We also farewell Tracey Scarlett, who has had many roles in schools and has been at Calwell High School since 2012. We know that all in our community have loved having Tracey looking out for them and supporting them over the years.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Megan

SEMESTER 1 STUDENT REPORTING

With the middle of the school year fast approaching our teachers will soon be preparing student reports for Semester 1. This semester we will be providing students with an overall A-E grade, and an assessment of achievement standard statements on a five-point scale.

While Semester 1 reports will not include detailed teacher comments, parents/carers are encouraged to speak directly with their child’s teacher(s) if they have any questions or concerns about their progress. Our teachers will also continue to communicate directly with you when there are any concerns about student learning or other classroom updates.

FACULTY UPDATES

ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY
It’s been a great start to the year for our elective programs. We’ve introduced some new units including Percussion Ensemble and Textile Studio Design. Students are loving exploring the content and learning new skills along the way.

Planning is underway for our Showcase performance at the end of Semester 1. Our performers are busy rehearsing their pieces and our artists busy creating their artworks. We can’t wait for it to come together and look forward to seeing you all there. More information about dates and times will be sent later in the term.

Our technology students have been hard at work also. Below are some of the amazing pieces our woodwork and metalwork students have created.
LEARNING SUPPORT UNIT
Canberra Autumn, by CHS LSU
I see colourful leaves, red,
Trees are losing their leaves; orange and yellow,
Blue skies, grey skies, the kangaroos in the morning feast on green grass.
Frost glimmering when the sun is out in the morning
Brindabellas pink, blue, yellow, and violet as the sun sets.
I smell wet, moist air and leaves, firewood smoke
I hear rustling in the wind, people saying ‘it’s getting cold’!
Crunching and cracking of leaves when I walk,
People are cheering for the Raiders.
I taste hot chocolate and ANZAC biscuits.
I feel freezing, cold, like I don’t want to get out of bed, I feel warm and snuggly in my hoodie.
I wonder if it will snow this year.
Should I bring my jacket to school today or should I jump in the leaves?

CAREERS NEWS

UNDERSTANDING BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM
Calwell High School has been selected as one of four schools to participate in the Understanding Building and Construction Pilot Program (UBCPP) in 2022. The ACT Government in partnership with the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) are seeking to enhance opportunities and remove barriers preventing young people from choosing a career pathway in the construction industry. This pilot program has been developed as part of a larger educational pipeline to support students to make informed career choices as they first proceed into high school, and later into higher education opportunities. The later stages of this program will focus on supporting young women and non-binary students to pursue a career in construction to address the significant lack of gender diversity in the industry.

The program will be implemented into Calwell High School in two ways:
  • A Year 7 and / or 8 program
  • A Year 9 and 10 Work Studies unit will be delivered as a timetabled elective during Semester 2 (see below)
As part of the program, students will access:
  • Certificates (Vocational Education and Training) – White Card and Asbestos Awareness Course and Infectious Control Training
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Work Experience placements
  • Links with industry, guest speakers, hands on experiences, excursions / incursions (CIT Try a Trade Day, university visit)
  • Opportunities available to enter Australian School based Apprenticeships (ASbAs)
  • Ongoing student support (industry, school, career development)
  • Work studies unit of work – Introduction to the Construction industry (aligned to the Australian Curriculum)
The Year 9/10 program will run as an elective in Semester 2 and you will be able to express your interest for the program after an information session which will be held in Term 2 (date to be advised).
If you would like more information about the course, please contact Claire Hennessy on 6142 1930 or Claire.Hennessy@ed.act.edu.

COMMUNITY NOTICES

KIDS INTO SPORT
The Vikings Group are excited to be working in partnership with the Rotary Club of Tuggeranong to bring Kids into Sport to our community. Kids into Sport is about every young person in Tuggeranong having the chance to play sport, which we know can deliver so much. This community project ensures that cost is no barrier to playing sport in our region. It delivers funding for sports fees, uniforms and equipment to those who most need it.

You can be involved in the Kids into Sport in a number of ways:
  1. Become a Referring Partner – Kids into Sport works with local sports clubs, schools, community and welfare organisations to identify, refer and support kids in Tuggeranong who need support. Our funding goes directly to the sporting organisation supporting the participants.
  2. Get support for your sports fees – Kids into Sport considers applications for funding for anyone aged 6-18, living in Tuggeranong, wanting to play for a local sports team and attending school. The program prioritises funding to kids who are unable to meet the costs of sports fees, uniforms and equipment.
  3. Donate – Kids into sport relies on the generous tax deductible community donations. The more donations, the more kids we can support. Every dollar received by Kids into Sport goes directly to supporting young people playing sport in our region.
