WEEK 9

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

I hope this message finds you all well as we start the Easter break. It's been a busy and fulfilling time here at school, and I'm excited to share some updates with you.

It is with mixed emotions that I share with you that our Deputy Principal Lisa Price will be joining the Education Support Office Curriculum and Learning team next term for the remainder of the year. Lisa has led our Teaching & Learning improvement, particularly the work to improve our curriculum and pedagogy. We wish her well and look forward to continuing to collaborate with Lisa in her new role.

We're always looking for ways to improve and adapt our processes to best serve our students and community. Your feedback on our implementation of the ACT Public School Mobile Phone Policy this term would be greatly appreciated. Please take a moment to share your thoughts with us via our Mobile Phone Policy Implementation Feedback form.

As we approach the end of term, I want to acknowledge that it has been a busy period for our students and staff. The Easter long weekend presents a well deserved opportunity for some rest and rejuvenation. Whether you're planning a getaway or enjoying some downtime at home, I hope you take this chance to recharge and spend quality time with loved ones.

We look forward to our last two weeks of term, it's truly a privilege to be part of such a vibrant and caring community.

Have a hoppy weekend.

Trish

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

JUNIOR GIRLS AND BOYS FUTSAL
On Tuesday, a group of year 7 and 8 students represented Calwell High School at the 2024 Regional School Futsal Titles. For the first time in many, many years, we had more than enough interest to enter a girls team into the competition.

The team showed great commitment to improving their skills, eager to train as much as possible in lead up to the competition. They had mixed results on the day, drawing against Alfred Deakin (an absolute nail biter as we drew level from a free kick after the whistle!), narrowly losing to both Jerrabomberra (0 – 1) and Radford (0 – 2), and losing their last game against Merici who went on to finish at the top on the day.

Despite results not going their way, they played as a team and remained determined and positive throughout the day. A big thank you to Arijana M (head coach) who took time out of her days to train, coach and develop knowledge and skills among the players.

Player’s Player Award – Misha S
Coach’s Award – Savannah R
Our junior boys team were just as keen, making it very hard for coaches to select the final team after 2 trials.

They did well in their round games, winning against Brindabella Christian College (3-2), Jerrabomberra (3-1) and Belconnen (3-1), while losing narrowly to both Canberra High (0-1) and Kingsford Smith (0-1).

It was a nervous wait to see if we’d done enough to make it to the quarter finals – and we did! Unfortunately that’s where it ended, going down 1-5 to Lyneham High in a game where the score did not reflect how close the encounter really was.

The boys should be very proud with their effort and achievements across the day – showing consistent grit and determination to win some close battles. A very special mention to Deyarmi G, Ashton H and James R (goal keeper) who were all scouted by ACT Futsal to represent the ACT at the 2024 National School Futsal Championships based on their performance at this competition – what an amazing achievement and very well deserved!

A massive thank you to Dylan T and Phillip A (head coaches) for their time and expertise in running this team in lead up and on the day.

FACULTY UPDATES

VISUAL ARTS
In Visual Arts, Year 8 has been hard at work, engaging in a variety of tasks, some of which will be showcased at the upcoming Arts Showcase next term.

Students have been busy participating in a dog drawing session where they sketched Mr. Ricky, competed in the "Chupa Chump" competition where they redesigned the logo and created a new, unique flavour, crafted a Wayne Thiebaud-inspired Pop Art Cup Cake collage, created stuffed animal portraits, and much more.

Through these activities, they have been developing skills and techniques in drawing, painting, and collaging.
SENIOR FOOD TECHNOLOGY
Students in the senior food technology classes this week did their individual self design recipe cooks, meeting their briefs of a fast food burger make over for one class and breakfast style burger for the other.

We have seen lots of student creativity with flavour combinations and presentation techniques. We are excited to see their final published recipes as they refine their drafts and hope to publish our first Calwell Food Technology cook book later this year.
DRAMA
Year 9/10 Drama have been developing an original script in which they play elderly people who meet regularly to play Bingo.

In order to develop these characters students have had to develop  understanding and empathy for the ageing process and the life experiences of older people. We look forward to bringing a version of "BINGO" to Showcase in Term 2.

In this photo you can see  some of our Bingo players: Gary, Gwenda, Alice and Gloria.
The Drama room has been full of energy  and laughter as Year 8 Drama students have  performed an assessment task based on characters entering a lift and responding to their inner thoughts.

The starting point of the character development was choosing a famous historical portrait, and asking  who would this person be if they were alive today?  Students demonstrated a high level of focus and acted out some amusing scenes.
SCIENCE

Year 9 Science: STEM based Chemistry.
Students completed their major assessment and learnt how to identify various metals by means of different chemical reactions. Students learnt the reactivity of a series of metals and their uses in practical life.

They also learnt how to take precise readings for a change in volume as well as changes in temperature to find the rate of reaction which can be shown in computer-based graphs.

A special thanks to Aki (our science lab assistant) for making science fun for our students.
