WEEK 8

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Hats off to our incredible Parents & Citizens (P&C) group for their unwavering support! Last weekend, they were at the markets, raising funds to enhance our school. This Friday, they're rolling up their sleeves for a working bee to spruce up our outdoor spaces. Thank you to you the community for your continued support of our school. If you haven't done so already, joining the P&C for these events is a great way to be involved in our school.

In other news, our Outdoor Ed adventurers are having a blast! From sun-soaked surfing sessions to night time snorkels, the adventures are amazing. Massive thanks to our staff for organising these unforgettable experiences.

More adventures await! Stay tuned for upcoming Outdoor Ed camps, along with our eagerly anticipated Year 7 and Year 10 camps. We understand the financial strain camps can pose, if you need assistance, our front office is here to help. Let's ensure every student has the chance to embrace the invaluable learning opportunities these adventures offer.

Have a wonderful sunny weekend.

Trish

FACULTY UPDATES

WOOD TECHNOLOGY
Year 8 Woodwork Update: Our Year 8 students have been hard at work in Woodwork class, crafting something extraordinary over the past five weeks: their very own limited edition Jenga game! Infused with unique designs and concepts, each game is a masterpiece.

To top it off, students took on Calwell staff in an epic Jenga battle, creating moments of laughter and camaraderie. Despite a valiant effort, it seems our teachers may have emerged victorious. Nonetheless, it was an absolute blast for everyone involved. Kudos to our talented Year 8 Woodwork students for their dedication and innovation. We're eagerly anticipating their next creative endeavour!
FOOD TECHNOLOGY

Breakfast, Brunch and Coffee

Students have been revelling in the culinary delights of breakfast preparation, experimenting with a diverse range of dishes. They have the opportunity to customise their creations using ingredients at hand, aligning with the weekly design brief theme, which has included breakfast scrolls, English big breakfasts, omelettes, and eggs & bacon.

Additionally, as students become more adept with the coffee machine, staff are delighted to see the return of the coffee club, satisfying their caffeine cravings with each flavourful brew.
Paddock to Plate
The year 7 Paddock to Plate class this week took advantage of the abundance of lemons at this time of year and made lemon tarts. The students prepared the baked tart cases and filled them with the most delicious lemon curd they had made with the fresh lemons.

If you would like to make the tarts here is the recipe:

WELLBEING
Every Wednesday, during Break 2, Wellbeing have been creating and selling '2 Buc' bowls to students and staff to help fund activities such as Breakfast Club. Each week is different and so far we have enjoyed such things as Nachos, Spaghetti Bolognese, Fried Rice, (thanks to Donna Hands), and this week - Chicken and Gravy Rolls. We look forward to next weeks offering!

CAREERS & STUDENT PATHWAYS

MAKER2 MARKET
In a world where creativity, innovation, and execution are highly valued, are your teens building these real-world skills?

A creative teen cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset and sustaining a business during high school is equipping themselves with highly valuable skills including the chance to enhance practical abilities, make money by following their creative passion, and handling responsibilities early on. Achieving milestones in an entrepreneurial journey fosters a sense of accomplishment while boosting confidence and motivation. Importantly, the growing self-assurance can have positive impacts on academic performance, social relationships, and personal growth - aspects increasingly crucial during adolescence.

Our Maker2Market business taster experience is a three-day real-world learning program held in school holidays for creative teens aged 10-17 to deep dive into creating a micro-business, making hand-made products, and selling them to real customers at Old Bus Depot Markets

Having guided over 600 creative teens through this journey over the last few years, we understand that engaging in making, creating, and problem-solving allows young people to be resourceful. It encourages risk-taking with clear objectives while fostering the development of life skills such as self-confidence, curiosity, determination, resilience, and belief in their capabilities.
Our program is a fun, learning experience based on design thinking principles that cultivate problem-solving skills, curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, perseverance, and social skills among participants. It is an excellent introduction to the innovation life-cycle encompassing problem identification, prototyping, designing, making, testing, and improving.
The skills acquired from this hands-on experience enable creative teens to earn money by pursuing their passions and doing what they love.

P&C NEWS

Hello Parents, Carers and Friends

The P&C do a great job helping with garden projects at Calwell High as part of the ongoing “Greening Calwell High” program. We organise working bees and other special activities to not only keep the gardens in good shape, but to also assist in new initiatives such as building the veggie gardens that complement the school’s “Paddock To Plate” program for students.

We thank CHS parents and families for your help with these activities – they only happen through ongoing volunteer effort and your work is appreciated. It only involves and hour or two of your time on an infrequent basis and is an enjoyable and rewarding opportunity to help the school and also to meet up with other families. No special skills or heavy effort are needed – you can push a wheelbarrow, spread some mulch, pull a few weeds, plant a few plants etc, whatever suits.

So we hope that when we raise our hand asking for your assistance, you can put you hand up to come along and help us out. Please keep an eye on the school FaceBook page and the weekly newsletter “What’s Happening” for info on these opportunities and how to let us know you'll be available – your involvement is always very much appreciated.

P&C BBQ
Thank you to parents, grandparents and students who helped out at our P&C BBQ at Calwell Community Markets last Saturday. This was another great opportunity to connect with the general community, support local businesses and to raise some funds for the school. It was also a great time for those who worked at the BBQ for a pleasant meet-up to chat, exchange ideas etc.
