WEEK 7

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

I hope this newsletter finds you well as we venture further into the school year. This week marks an annual milestone in the school calendar as our Years 7 & 9 students participated in NAPLAN assessments. I would like to extend my gratitude to all students, staff and families for their support and preparation leading up to this week. NAPLAN serves as one of the many tools we use to evaluate our students' progress and identify areas where we can continue to excel and improve as a school.

I would also like to take a moment to express my appreciation for the positive reception and compliance to our new mobile phone policy. The cooperation we've seen from students and families has been outstanding. By minimising distractions and fostering a focused learning environment, we are empowering our students to maximise their potential and engage fully in their educational journey.

A reminder to Year 7 families about the upcoming Year 7 Camp. This fantastic experience not only provides valuable learning opportunities but also enables students to forge lasting friendships and strengthen their sense of belonging within the school community. Please submit permission notes by next Friday 22 March to assist with planning.

Trish

FACULTY UPDATES

INCLUSION SUPPORT

Projects
In Projects we work on the thinking involved in planning and procedures. Our procedural activity is making miniature houses that will go to making a small village in the classroom terrarium. This has included looking at how other people around the world make and build houses. We will be elaborating further on this topic.

Science
In science we have been thinking about what scientists do and the different areas of study that come under the umbrella of science. We have learnt about safety in the laboratory and we have conducted our first experiment in the brand new lab. We the recorded our raw data and used it to inform our plot graph.

Gardening
We have spent some time in the gardens too which means we have to know something about planting and caring for the plants around us!
FOOD TECHNOLOGY - PADDOCK TO PLATE
The Year 7 elective students have had a great couple of weeks of cooking and sorting out the garden. As our garden is just starting out, we have sourced some local produce, tomatoes and apples, from kind donators. The sage however was from our garden and the dish was so delicious. We have made tomato bruschetta,  baked apples and burnt sage butter gnocchi (all from scratch!).

Next week we are planning to make lemon tarts and get stuck into the garden again, now that the weather has cooled down.

Here are some photos of our amazing creations!
SCIENCE

Year 8

Students are learning about the law of conservation of energy as well as transformation of one form of energy into another in practical life scenarios.

Students demonstrated the conversion of potential energy into kinetic energy by making motors with rubber bands along with wheel and small wooden logs (Potential energy of twisted rubber band gets converted into kinetic energy moving a wheel). Students also had a competition in small groups to see whose rubber-band motor wins the race.

And then they all made a garden paper pinwheel to demonstrate the principal of windmills where wind energy turns propellers like blades around a rotor. And the rotor is connected to the main shaft, which spins metal coils in a generator to create electricity.

Special thanks to Sherie for her assistance and for making science learning fun for the students.

Year 10
Students have learnt Newton’s law of motion and explained the use of these laws of physics in our daily life. Students learnt the concept of inertia, the relationship between force applied and acceleration produced as well as action and equal opposite reactions in nature and in practical life.

They also demonstrated these basic principles in fun practicals, such as, propulsion of balloons, motion of a series of pendulums and the change in shape, velocity, and directions of objects with force.

Propulsion systems are governed by Newton’s Third Law, “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” A balloon provides a simple example of how a rocket engine works. The air trapped inside the balloon pushes out the open end, causing the balloon to move forward.

P&C NEWS

Hello parents, carers and friends

We're still on the lookout for some helping hands at our P&C BBQ stall at the regular monthly Calwell Markets on Saturday 16 March. This is an excellent opportunity for engagement with the community, to support local businesses, and of course an excellent P&C fundraising opportunity in support of our school. We'd love for you to join us on the day to help out. The signup link is volunteersignup.org/B373M.

Also, don't forget to vote for Calwell High during the month of March at Grill'd!
Calwell High has a 'Local Matters' jar at Grill’d Woden for the whole month of March.

It’s a great way for us to spread the positive message to the community about Calwell High, as well as a good fundraising opportunity for us. You receive a bottle-top token with each burger that you buy, then place the token in our jar, which is one of the three jars on display.

A great opportunity to support your school while enjoying a delicious meal, please share with your family and friends to help spread the word!
