WEEK 5

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

The term is passing us by quickly!

This week I have been fortunate to get into classes and see students creativity. So many of our classroom walls are bursting with student work and creative responses.

Next week the Women In Construction class will be engaging in Asbestos and Silica Training as well as White Card training. It is great that we have the partnership with CIT and the construction industry to give our students this great opportunity.

With the warm weather continuing, it's essential for students to stay hydrated throughout the day. Please encourage your student to bring a water bottle to school, as this helps their well-being and ensure=s they can focus and perform their best in class.

Thanks to the Wellbeing Team and this weeks Fried Rice chef Donna for keeping us fed on Wednesdays $2 Buc Bowls! This has been a great addition to our week!

Have a lovely sunny weekend.

Trish

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

2024 CALWELL HIGH SCHOOLSWIMMING CARNIVAL
Last Thursday saw the first of our 3 whole school carnivals, with our swimming carnival taking place at Civic Pool. It was great to see so many students in attendance, repping their houses with pride and passion, either cheering on their mates, or taking part in races.

The day started off with a bang, getting straight into house relays and coming right down the wire with Fraser overtaking Freeman with the last stroke. From there, we moved straight into competitive races, with some fantastic results seen across the day.

Before we broke for lunch and free time, it was a battle between staff and students in a 4x50m relay. Despite a valiant effort from the staff, the students took out the win rather convincingly. Free time was filled with endless jumping from the dive platforms, beach volleyball, cricket and a sausage sizzle.

Thanks to all staff and students who came along and made the day so fun and enjoyable. Stay tuned for the final results and winning house!

Finally, congratulations to the following students who are our 2024 Age Champions;

CONNECTION CLUBS
Connection Clubs are starting in Week 6!
Expressions of Interest for a connection club
Are you searching for the point of life? What is life about? What if life was more than our experiences?  This will be a rich and fun time where students will have the space to think about faith as they take a look at a video, be guided by the bible and share their thoughts and questions together. (supported by SU Australia) Please let the Front Office know if you are interested.

FACULTY UPDATES

ENGLISH

Year 7
Unit: Totally Texts
Year 7 students have started to navigate the world of high school English, exploring key concepts such as genre, making meaning and how we connect to texts. We are also playing around with different tech tools, creating a word cloud that represents our personal identity.
Year 9
Unit: Coming of Age
Year 9 students in Tim, Julia and Kellie’s classes have been looking at how the novel A Monster Calls uses metaphor to represent fear - deep!
They have created a wordcloud to represent their understanding of our key concepts - growing up and monsters/ fear.
Ms Currie’s year 9 English class is investigating symbolism in Catcher in the Rye, a book about growing up in the 50’s. Students have been comparing how people perceive youth today, versus in the 50’s, and are developing an understanding of what “growing up” really means.

Year 10
Unit: Change the World - Protest and Persuasion
Exploring protest has been both confronting and thought provoking. We have looked at various historical and contemporary protests and unpacked the issue/s that underpin them.

Students have been building their understanding of protest by collaboratively developing a visual glossary.
DRAMA
Drama students engaged in various exercises with and without costumes.
MATHS

Year 7
We have been investigating the use of statistics to help us see trends and averages in the real world. We will begin designing an investigation to research a topic where we can make a statistical comparison. Topics could include:
  • Conducting an investigation to draw conclusions about whether students' breakfast habits change across year 7 to year 10.
  • Conducting an investigation to draw conclusions about whether Year 7 students have faster reaction times than adults.
  • Conducting an investigation to draw conclusions on First Nation perspectives at Calwell High School, similar to the Reconciliation Barometer
  • Conducting an investigation to draw conclusions on the most utilised social areas of the high school.
  • Conducting an investigation to draw conclusions on the better of two teams in a chosen sport.
After this we will begin building our number sense around positive and negative numbers in different real world contexts.
Year 8
In our Year 8 classes we are finishing up our work on representing numbers in different forms with a focus on understanding how to simplify expressions with indices (powers).

We had some fun completing online worksheets to practise our new knowledge of multiplying and dividing with negative numbers. We have also been using Mathspace to help us build more confidence.
After this topic we will begin looking into how we can simplify expressions using algebra.
Year 9
We have been looking at the different ways to simplify mathematical expressions to make them easier to use. We considered the rules (or laws) for indices and how they work together. A lot of us have been simplifying some pretty complex expressions into something a little easier to digest.
Our next topic is investigating how we represent distance and steepness on flat spaces like cartesian planes or maps.
Year 10
In Year 10 we started off the year investigating how we can we use simultaneous equations in real world situations to help us solve problems. Our recent assessment investigated the different ways we pay for electricity and asked if solar panels were worth the costs.

We have been making a lot of use of the Desmos graphing calculator to help us simplify the process for creating graphs to give us some visual clues for solving problems and justifying our solutions.
OUTDOOR EDUCATION
Outdoor Education 1 had their first session canoeing at Lake Tuggeranong on Wednesday 28. Students had an amazing time and showed fantastic teamwork. There was beautiful weather and smiles all round!
SCIENCE
Year 10 Science are doing STEM based science experiments to derive the relationship between a force acting on a body, acceleration produced and mass of a body.  Students created position vs time and velocity vs time graphs and compared the gradients of their graphs.
Year 7 Science students are very enthusiastic and precise in their practical experiments. Year 7 followed excellent safety procedures in the labs and collected accurate readings of various measurements. They also made hot chocolate in the lab and enjoyed it while describing various variables and factors that affect heat loss as well as temperature change of an object.

P&C NEWS

Hello parents, carers and friends

Big and exciting things are planned for the P&C this year and as always we welcome any new members wanting to assist in any way. Just a reminder that we are still looking for a treasurer, being a small committee, the role is a simple one and our friendly members are more than happy to help while you find your feet. If you are interested or know of anyone who is, we would love to hear from you!

IT’S TIME TO VOTE FOR CALWELL HIGH
Every month, each Grill’d restaurant splits $500 between three groups doing amazing work in the community - and that’s where YOUR vote counts.

Calwell High has a “Local Matters” jar at Grill’d Woden for the whole month of March.

It’s a great way for us to spread the positive message to the community about Calwell High, as well as a good fundraising opportunity for us. You receive a bottle-top token with each burger that you buy, then place the token in our jar, which is one of the three jars on display.

Tokens are tallied up at the end of the month. The highest score receives $300, and the two runners-up receive $100 each.

A great opportunity to support your school while enjoying a delicious meal, please share with your family and friends to help spread the word!
