WEEK 10

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

I was filled with pride yesterday as I welcomed the Director General of the Education Directorate, Katy Haire, to our school. It was a pleasure to show her around our newly refurbished science labs and visit many classrooms. Walking through classes and engaging with students alongside Katy highlighted the exceptional teaching and learning happening in our school every day.

We are looking forward to a busy last week of term next week. By the end of the week, our Year 10 students will be Road Ready and our Year 7 campers will be ready for a rest! We will also come together as a whole school on Wednesday for an Assembly to celebrate the successes and accomplishments of the term together.

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our outgoing 2023 School Board members: Pippa (Board Chair and Parent Representative), Megan (Parent Representative), Sarah (Staff Representative) and Sally (Student Representative). Serving on the Board is a crucial role within our school community, and I am sincerely grateful for your dedication and contribution to our school's strategic planning.

Trish

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

SENIOR REGIONAL SCHOOL FUTSAL TITLES
This week saw our seniors attend the Regional School Futsal Titles at the Dome in Fadden on Wednesday. With an overwhelming turnout at trials, we were able to field two teams in the boys senior division.

Our Calwell Blue team had a difficult pool, going up against some tough competition and unable to win a game despite some close results.

All players should be proud of the effort and determination they demonstrated throughout the day, unlucky not have that translate into better results in some games.

A massive congratulations to Diego G who was invited to represent the ACT at the upcoming Nationals in Brisbane later this year.

Player’s Player – Deigo G
Coach’s Award – Riley F (goalkeeper)
Our Calwell Red team also had a competitive pool, with mixed results throughout the day. We started out well with a 1-0 win over Covenant, thanks to some crafty juggling skills over the goal line by Arijana M (who more than proved her ability to match it with the boys and was a valuable part of our senior A team).

We lost our second game against Alfred Deakin after a short flurry of goals that we were unable to come back from. Our third game against Stromlo had us back in the winner’s circle, after a last second goal from Gus saw us clinch the win 2-1.

Unfortunately, we lost our last game 1-0 against Belconnen and therefore narrowly missed out on progressing through to the finals. Again, this team should be proud of the effort, skill and teamwork they demonstrated across all games.

Player’s Player – Dylan T
Coach’s Award – Phillip A and Blaik
GARDEN CONNECTION CLUB
The kitchen Garden Connection Club made Bunny Bottom Biscuits with Fondant for fun before Easter!
ADVANCED OUTDOOR EDUCATION JERVIS BAY EXCURSION
Advanced Outdoor Ed embarked on a three-day adventure to Jervis Bay, immersing themselves in a range of outdoor activities amidst the stunning coastal scenery.

Snorkelling excursions at Scottish Rocks and Murray's Beach provided the group with unique encounters with the marine life of the area, including Wobbegongs, Port Jackson Sharks, Banjo Sharks, Octopus, Cuttlefish, Gropers, and rays.

A particularly memorable highlight was the night snorkel, where the group was treated to the enchanting sight of bioluminescence illuminating the waters, adding a magical touch to their underwater exploration.

Despite initial concerns about the weather, we were lucky enough to have perfect conditions from the Thursday onwards. The clear skies and calm waters facilitated not only our snorkelling adventures but also our surfing session at Cave's Beach, where we rode the waves surrounded by beautiful coastal landscape.

The favourable weather allowed us to really enjoy the natural beauty of Jervis Bay, Bristol Point and make the most of our outdoor experiences.

We are already looking forwards and towards our next adventure in Bungonia National Park next term.

FACULTY UPDATES

YEARS 9/10 INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOGRAPHY
During the last few weeks of Photography, students have been adding images to their Digital Portfolio. They have been photographing dominant colours around the school and creating a collage of images.

Their second assessment task that they are currently finalising is a Weekly Photo Challenge where they had to take 10 themed images to analyse. Students are loving being behind the camera!
PADDOCK TO PLATE
The Paddock to Plate class made Roti and Tzatziki dip and banana and coconut in class.  It was fun to make the Roti and then try the delicious combination of bread and dips, which many of our students had not had before.  The final task next week is to make pizza using produce from the garden.
SCIENCE
This week in science Year 7 students were experimenting with Dry Ice. We observed its sublimation, where the solid carbon dioxide gas did not melt, but turned straight into a gas. We used it like a fire extinguisher to put out candles by pouring the gas onto the flames, and saw some super-cool bubbles form when we mixed it with water and detergent.

We also completed our learning about fair testing by putting pieces of dry ice into balloons and comparing how much they inflated.
