WEEK 8

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

This week we celebrated Harmony Day and diversity through our Aspire class and assembly. This included a great performance, presentation of student awards and a report from our Calwell Compass (Student Voice) Project.

I was thrilled to finally introduce our new Deputy Principal of Happiness, the amazing Mr Ricky! Mr Ricky is not a typical Calwell High School deputy principal, as he is much shorter than Ms Marton and has much more hair than Mr Eastburn. He has already brought so much joy and laughter to the school community, and we are excited to see the positive impact he will have on our students' wellbeing.

Mr Ricky will be joining us in the classrooms, the playgrounds, and during school events to spread his infectious positivity and affection. Research has shown that having dogs in schools can improve socialisation skills, reduce anxiety and stress levels, and promote physical activity. Mr Ricky's presence will undoubtedly contribute to creating a happier and healthier learning environment for our students (and staff).

As always, the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff remain our top priority, and we have taken all necessary precautions to ensure that Mr Ricky is well trained, vaccinated, and always supervised. If your child has any allergies or fears towards dogs, please do not hesitate to contact us, and we will make the necessary arrangements to ensure their comfort and safety.

Please come and meet Mr Ricky at the P&C Meeting next Wednesday.

Have a great weekend.

Steve

LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE EXCURSION
Yesterday, four of our awesome Leadership and Service students – Shimaz, Sarah, Brielle and Taleisha – visited Parliament House to engage with senior political and media leaders.

Highlights included:
  • A roundtable discussion with Minister Katy Gallagher on women’s rights, raising policy ideas such as period leave and bridging the gender pay gap;
  • A visit to the ABC studios in the Press Gallery, meeting with the fabulous journalists such as Krishani Dhanji and Greg Jennett.
  • Meeting the super Stela Todorovic from Channel 10;
  • Directly lobbying the Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Tim Watts, for Australia to provide support for women’s sports around the world; and
  • A meeting with Senator Fatima Payman, the first hijab-wearing woman elected to the Australian Parliament, where she provided some inspirational advice to the girls.
When these girls eventually serve in influential leadership positions, we’ll be in very good hands!
HOMEWORK CLUB
There will be Teacher support and Assistant support in the form of Mr Ventura and Mr McLennan.

It is a fantastic opportunity for students that just need that extra bit of catch-up, especially in the last weeks of the term when assessments are high in demand! 😊

Spread the news! Homework Club is open, in the library, 3.00pm Thursday. Even if you’re there for 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or an hour, every bit of time helps!
CARD CLUB
What has 13 hearts but no other organ? Answer: A deck of 52 playing cards!

The Card club meets every Friday during Break 2 in B23.
AESTHETICS CLUB
Aesthetics Connection Club is a great place to learn and practice cosmetics skills, while meeting with friends in a safe and supportive environment. Everyone is welcome, and participants are encouraged to bring their own supplies if available. There are some shared resources available as well. Aesthetics Club runs on Thursdays at Second Break in B15.

P&C NEWS

Hello Parents and Carers and Friends

It was great to be at the Year 7 parents’ information night this week, and to hear about the upcoming Year 7 camp and also about the school’s wellbeing support services. The P&C thanks Principal Steve Collins for the opportunity for some of our committee to chat with parents afterwards about how the P&C supports the school. It’s wonderful that a number of parents came forward to offer their help to the P&C. We have some great projects coming up, where this help will be very valuable. But of course it was the new Vice Principal of Happiness, Mr Ricky, who really stole the show.

A reminder that our AGM is next week on Wednesday 29 March at 6.00pm in the main staff room. We'll be having pizza and nibbles so please send us an email if you would like to join us, it will be great to see you there.

We’re fortunate to already have nominations for most of committee positions and we have some great information to share with you about a number of current and upcoming P&C projects during the general meeting that follows straight after the AGM

FACULTY NEWS

FOOD TECHNOLOGY
This week, Year 7 Food Technology tried their hand at making pizza scrolls. I am sure there was very little left to take home!
SCIENCE
Year 8
There is no 'over reaction' in our chemistry lab, everything is 'stable'  here.

Our Year 8 students decided to make spiders (a mocktail drink) and demonstrated nucleation in the process before they enjoyed their creation. Our excuse was, 'we are young scientists of Calwell High School and create as we please'.

If you add soft drink to ice cream, the carbon dioxide (CO2) in the soft drink nucleates and forms bubbles or frothy foam on top of the drink.

The reason for the formation of fizz is due to a process called Nucleation.

Soft drink contains CO2 which comes to the surface and ice cream increases the rate of release of this CO2 from the soft drink causing increased fizzing. This increased rate is a result of the solvation of ice cream particles into the liquid. Ice cream particles serve as nucleation sites for the further growth of gas bubbles. The bubbles get large quiet fast and hence we observe fizzing.

Now, if if you would like to try the above chemistry, then simply make a spider at home!
Year 7
Year 7 students experimented with various techniques to separate the components of mixtures. Magnetism, chromatography, distillation, and filtration are some of those techniques. If you have problems, come to the science students in the lab, we make 'solutions'!

STUDENT PATHWAYS AND CAREERS NEWS

CAREERS EVENT
EPICC: Engaging Parents/Carers in Career Conversations
Presented by Jennie Sheppard, Careers Practitioner & Andrew Rowe, ASBA/WEX Coordinator

Research Indicates that parents/carers are the single greatest influence on their young person’s education and career decisions. High Parental engagement can have a major impact on the young person’s learning. The purpose of the EPICC workshop is to:
  • Support parents/carers to help young people prepare for the challenges ahead in the new economies and new jobs that none of us know very well or much about;
  • Enhance parents’/carers’ ability to help young people develop skills and have the capability  to manage their own career throughout their lives;
  • Help shift perceptions by assisting parents and young people to understand the career journey young people are on from an early age;
  • Equip parents/carers to help young people to develop and build their preferred career futures,  feel less worried about the future and build a supportive network to assist them
  • Aim to challenge outdated belief systems that can limit a young person’s potential
Tuesday 28 March 5.30-7.00pm
Location: Calwell High School Library

Please RSVP at the following link: https://forms.gle/B2fRbkvwhJETb9Nr8
