WEEK 6

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

This week we greatly enjoyed another great variety of Connection Clubs. Seeing students make new friends and engage in fun activities is so pleasing to see. This is one of our priorities this year at Calwell High School – Building Student Connection to School and Pathways. We will continue to implement a range of strategies to achieve this including:
  • Expanding our implementation of Positive Behaviours for Learning Framework (PBL).
  • Continuing to broaden the work of our amazing students in the Calwell Compass Program (Student Voice).
  • Embedding careers and further education pathways learning into the programs for all year students.
  • Increasing student elective offerings such as Outdoor Education and Student Service Learning.
We will be surveying the students in the coming week to allow more voice regarding the way they engage best and potentially opening up some more options to better align with the flexible learning experienced at College and University.

This week we also had our School Board Meeting where we had our final meeting with our 2022 Board. We took some time to provide a special thanks to our outgoing Board Chair, Michelle Bruce for her outstanding leadership through some significant challenges. We are so grateful that she will be remaining on our P&C and continuing to make valuable contributions to our school.

Have a lovely weekend.

Steve

FACULTY NEWS

SCIENCE
Year 7 have spent the beginning of the year learning about safety in the science lab. We have focused on developing our skills to make sure we are using safe work practices.

Year 7 have had the opportunity to light and use a Bunsen burner to conduct a heat experiment using a beaker, clamp stand, thermometer and heat proof mat. We investigated whether water would take longer to boil with or without salt. We are in the midst of discussing the results and conclusions.

Well done Year 7!
DRAMA
Charlie M plays the villain and Xavier M the victim in our Year 8 Melodrama class!
Kira D, Georgia M and Lissi O show their skills in using chairs to represent boats!
Edward B and Alexander N show their best melodramatic acting skills!

P&C NEWS

Hello Parents and Carers and Friends

Over the past few weeks the students from Mr Ventura’s HASS Leadership and Service class have done excellent work around the school gardens and street frontage with planting, mulching, weeding and general cleaning up. Last Friday was a highlight of the program, with the students participating in Schools Clean-up Day as part of the broader Australia-wide initiative. Nola and I have enjoyed assisting with these activities and the P&C is now putting out the call to parents and family members who might like to assist also.

Mr Ventura’s plan is for the students to also be engaged in other types of activities that benefit the school and give the students some insight to the trade skills that go with such activities – such as landscaping, painting, building works etc. It would be great to have parents, who work in these types of areas, coming along to share their knowledge and skills with the students. Please let us know at
calwellhighpandc@gmail.com if you would like to help.

Also looking forward to seeing you at our P&C AGM on Wednesday 29 March. We would love to hear from you if you would like to nominate for a role in the P&C Team.

CAREERS EVENT
EPICC: Engaging Parents/Carers in Career Conversations
Presented by Jennie Sheppard, Careers Practitioner & Andrew Rowe, ASBA/WEX Coordinator

Research Indicates that parents/carers are the single greatest influence on their young person’s education and career decisions.  High Parental engagement can have a major impact on the young person’s learning. The purpose of the EPICC workshop is to:
  • Support parents/carers to help young people prepare for the challenges ahead in the new economies and new jobs that none of us know very well or much about;
  • Enhance parents’/carers’ ability to help young people develop skills and have the capability  to manage their own career throughout their lives;
  • Help shift perceptions by assisting parents and young people to understand the career journey young people are on from an early age;
  • Equip parents/carers to help young people to develop and build their preferred career futures,  feel less worries about the future and build a supportive network to assist them
  • Aim to challenge outdated belief systems that can limit a young person’s potential
Tuesday 28 May 5.30–7.00pm
