WHAT'S HAPPENING?
WEEK 4

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Our highlight this week was most definitely our swimming carnival. Our PE Staff did an amazing job in keeping us all safe and entertained, and there were some seriously fast swimmers on show. The diving platforms is where most of the fun was had however, and although there did not appear to be any Olympic divers present, there were some outstanding bellyflops, especially from Mr Rodriguez! There will be more news from the carnival in What's Happening? next week.

On Wednesday evening, we enjoyed our first P&C Meeting of the year, where our Head of Careers and Pathways, Jennie Sheppard, presented the great things happening in that space at Calwell High School.

Next week we will be starting our break time Connection Clubs, where staff will be offering a range of opt in activities such as sports, arts and games for students to engage in with like-minded peers. The Chess Club is already generating great interest. We look forward to sharing some photos and reports from these groups in the coming weeks.

Have a great weekend.

Steve

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

NAPLAN
NAPLAN testing will occur in our school between 15 and 27 March 2023.

Education ministers agreed that NAPLAN would move to Term 1 from 2023. This will mean results will be available to education authorities earlier in the year to inform school and system teaching and learning programs and will assist teachers to better determine support students need for the coming year.

NAPLAN Online is a more engaging assessment that adjusts questions to each student’s achievement level.

NAPLAN provides valuable information to schools and parents about literacy and numeracy achievement. It supports school improvement processes by enabling teachers to monitor student progress over time and to identify areas of strength and development.

All eligible students are encouraged and supported to participate in NAPLAN testing. Visit
www.nap.edu.au to see interactive versions of the test and for more information.

If you have any questions about your child’s participation in NAPLAN please contact the school or email the NAPLAN coordinators directly:
Jodi.Adams@ed.act.edu.au or Lisa.Price@ed.act.edu.au.
CERTIFICATE II IN CONSTRUCTION PATHWAYS
On Wednesday 22 February, a group of students commenced the Certificate II in Construction Pathways course run by CIT trainers at Calwell High School.

The students learnt about work health and safety (WHS) requirements as well as identifying risks and hazards and the controls needed to perform safe work practices with concern for personal safety and the safety of others.

The course will run throughout Semester 1 and see all students involved learn the skills and knowledge required for a range of support tasks which apply in a variety of construction work industries.
2023 HOUSE CAPTAINS
On Friday 17 February, Calwell High School elected it's House Captains for 2023. Each House elected two senior and two junior captains. Please see below for our successful nominees and congratulate them all when you see them next!

FACULTY NEWS

SCIENCE
In Week 4, Year 10 science classes were visited by Paula Taylor from the Academy of Future Skills, who showed us equipment which is used to measure acceleration and force.

Students were able to visualise and manipulate the relationships between mass, acceleration and force. Students relished the chance to be hands-on with some serious tech, and Paula explained some upcoming opportunities for students to explore science careers through work experience placements in 2023.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) NEWS

PBL – SEEKING COMMUNITY FEEDBACK!
The PBL team are finalising Calwell’s Whole School Behaviour Matrix. This document should capture our desired behaviour across the school and in particular in certain areas linking everything back to our four school values – Respect, Self-discipline, Courage and Achievement.

We are at the final stage of the consultation process having collated and applied, staff executive, whole staff and student body feedback. The last step in the process is your voice! The idea behind the language used is to positively frame behaviours (not using no’s and don’ts), to be concise and to the point.

Once this document is finalised, the PBL team will be able to start our signage and poster process to make our desired behaviours clear and visible throughout the school.

Please take some time to discuss our overarching Whole School Behaviour Matrix with your student and have a look at the areas, values and behaviours within. If you would like to provide some feedback, please do so through our Feedback Form.

If you or your student has any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch wit the PBL Team at Calwell High School – calwellhighschool@ed.act.edu.au

YEAR 10 HOODIES

A second and final order for our Y10 hoodies has been opened at:
https://www.reformclothing.com/au/order/1935110235

Please see the design below. A sizing kit will not be available this time around. As a general rule, we found that going one size up from normal worked well across the board.

P&C NEWS

Hello Parents, Carers and Friends

Our Calwell High School P&C delegates for the ACT Council of P&C Associations are Geoff Puleston and Pippa Harbers. Geoff attended this week’s meeting of the P&C council and one handy take-out, among many others from the meeting, is the series of 2023 workshops for P&Cs, with topics like writing of grant submissions, P&C operations and fundraising, training for P&C committee members. There are also many other useful resources like P&C promotion packs that we can use to reach out to the broader community, guidelines on roles of committee people, help for AGMs and more. There is certainly a lot of assistance for P&Cs available through our affiliation with the P&C Council. With our AGM coming up on Wednesday 29 March at 6.00pm, we will be sending out more information on this very useful material.

If you are dining at the Southern Cross Club, don't forget to support the school by nominating Calwell High School as your preferred Community Group on your Southern Cross Club membership!

Best wishes
Geoff Puleston, President Calwell High School P&C
