WEEK 3

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Week 3 has certainly felt like summer and we have our fingers crossed that this weather keeps up for our Swimming Carnival next Thursday. The PE Faculty are especially keen and have been applying the zinc cream since Week 1.

My highlight this week was visiting the Year 7 and 8 students in the Calwell Compass Workshops on Wednesday. This group of students are representing their peers and promoting student voice to contribute to a range of improvements around the school. Thanks so much to Mr Sowton and Ms Streeter for their passionate coordination of this program and I can't wait to see their ideas implemented. The Year 9 and 10 students will get a similar opportunity in the coming weeks.

Another special moment this week was the Courage to Care presentation to some of our Year 9/10 students. Students learned the details of history directly from the words of a Holocaust Survivor which was a truly powerful and unique experience. Thanks Ms Adams for the coordination of this event.

I was also delighted to be able to show off our great school and students to a special visitor, Therapy Dog, Kiddy from Guide Dogs Australia. It was very interesting to see the positive effect this dog had on our students and staff and we will continue to seek out similar opportunities in the future.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the sunshine.

Steve

Hello Parents, Carers and Friends

P&C MEETING
WEDNESDAY 22 FEBRUARY, 6.00PM, CALWELL HS
INCLUDING A CAREERS & PATHWAYS PRESENTATION

ALL WELCOME, WITH A SPECIAL WELCOME TO NEW FAMILIES

Our P&C at Calwell High is affiliated with the ACT Council of P&C Associations, who are the peak body for parent associations in ACT public schools. They represent over 60,000 parents in 90 schools and assist our member associations. The Council has been representing parent and community views on public education to Government since 1954, doing this through:
  • consulting with public school parent and community groups to identify issues and ideas for improving public education
  • communicating with decision makers and contributing to policy development.
The Council also provides help, resources and training to members - Parent and Citizen Associations (P&Cs), Preschool Parent Associations (PPAs) and other similar parent bodies in ACT public schools - to help their volunteers to run these important organisations smoothly. EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

COURAGE TO CARE
Students from the Years 9/10 Rights and Freedoms History electives and Year 10 Advanced English had the honour to welcome the team from Courage to Care to Calwell for a special presentation.

Students heard moving and passionate stories from visiting Holocaust survivors, and explored the power of standing up and fighting against discrimination of all types.

A massive thank you to Courage to Care and the bravery of those survivors who shared their stories with us at Calwell, and helped us understand the power of positivity, second chances, and standing up in the face of discrimination.
WHITE CARD AND ASBESTOS TRAINING
Congratulations to all our students who competed their White Card and Asbestos Awareness Training this week. These qualifications enable students to gain entry onto work construction sites and therefore participate in Work experience and ASbA opportunities.

CALWELL COMPASS

On Wednesday, the Calwell Compass students spent the day collaborating and thinking of ideas to improve the school for 2023 and future years. We gathered in CPAC with two representatives from each tutor group from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10.

Together, we created a Mission Statement to guide our decision making. We brainstormed ideas to shape and model Calwell High into a community we are proud to be a part of. Splitting into two cohorts (7 & 8, 9 &10), we put forward our concerns and selected three main problems we wish to address.

The diversity of all of the ideas from across the years was wonderful to see, it was a pleasure to see so many young people that are proud to speak for their community and act to make it a better place. We look forward to seeing and hearing what wonderful ideas we can act on and the difference we can make.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) NEWS

On Wednesday as part of our Calwell Compass Training day, the students provided valuable feedback on our draft Whole School Behaviour Matrix. They have provided valuable feedback from the perspectives of all cohorts.

Over the next week, the feedback will be collated and our draft updated to reflect the student voice and input. The students also spent valuable time drafting and creating template posters for our PBL area’s which, once finalised, will go out to the whole school for a vote on the preferred template.

It was a fantastic opportunity to have students not only play a role in but drive the direction and image of PBL here at Calwell High School.
