Year 10 Certificate Requirements
Criteria for the Award of the Year 10 Certificate- Satisfactory academic achievement
- Satisfactory behaviour at school
- Satisfactory attendance at classes
This board endorsed policy provides a standard by which Calwell High School and its students can determine eligibility requirements for the award of the Year 10 Certificate. The 10 Certificate is a record of the students studies over Year 9 and 10.
Satisfactory academic achievement is defined as:
- 75% of grades awarded in Year 9 and 10 must be D or above (or no more than 25% of grades are to be E grades).
- Year Advisers receive a summary of grades for the respective year groups each semester. They will counsel students who receive E grades and monitor their performance more closely the following semester. Parents will be contacted if students' academic achievement is unsatisfactory. Guidance on choice of subjects, completion of assessment tasks and management of time will be provided or sought.
Satisfactory behaviour at school is defined as:
- If a student receives more than ten days of suspensions in any one year of the two year period of the certificate, or an equivalent number over part of that time they will not be awarded a certificate.
- Student behaviour is monitored for a four week period following return to school from suspension to assist the student in changing their behaviour patterns. Lesson checks are also used to provide the student with immediate and positive feedback.
Satisfactory attendance at classes is defined as:
- Attendance at at least 80% of classes in any one semester unless an acceptable reason (e.g. illness, family crisis, overseas leave, medical or other official appointments) is notified by the parent or carer in advance or at the time of the absence.
- Lateness will be considered as non-attendance as will fractional truancy. Students are expected to attend year and school assemblies.
- Students will be warned if their attendance, fractional truancy, attendance at year and school assemblies and lateness is unsatisfactory. Students who receive a warning will be placed on lesson checks to monitor their attendance more closely and support them in changing their attendance patterns.
Students who fail to meet the prescribed criteria for the Year 10 Certificate will receive a High School Record of their school results.
Students may appeal the decision taken by the Principal in writing within a one week period of the decisions being made.
The Principal reserves the right to consider extenuating circumstances when determining the award of the Year 10 Certificate.
