School Rules and Responsibilities

Students at Calwell High School have chosen three rules to ensure that all school community members have their rights protected and ensured. These rules are:

1. Safety - All students and staff have the right to feel safe at school.

2. Respect - All members of the school community have the right to be treated with respect.

3. Learning - Calwell High School is a place where students have the right to learn.

It is the responsibility of all students and staff at Calwell High School to protect and uphold these rights. Students are expected to follow school rules at all times and these rules are the basis of classroom expectations.

Calwell High School Relational Policy

Rationale

As part of the Calwell cluster of schools we practise restoratively.

Schools that practise restoratively focus on relationships and understand when some things happen within the school it has the potential to harm and damage relationships. When relationships are damaged, we need to look at what needs to happen to acknowledge behaviour and the impact, to repair that harm and strengthen or build relationships.

In a restorative school, we are concerned with answers to the following questions:

  • What happened?
  • Who has been harmed and affected?
  • What needs to happen to repair the harm?

When harm has occurred we seek to involve all stakeholders in a restorative process.

Values

In the Calwell Cluster, the values that underpin our relational approach are:

  • Care and compassion
  • Doing your best
  • Fair go
  • Freedom
  • Honesty and trustworthiness
  • Integrity
  • Respect
  • Responsibility
  • Understanding, tolerance and inclusion

Within the curriculum, values are explicitly taught along with the skills to strengthen relationships.

Principles

The principles that underpin our relational policy are:

  • We build and expect respectful relationships between all members of our school community.
  • Our environment is welcoming, safe, inclusive and considerate of all members of the school community.
  • Our school is a community of lifelong learners.
  • Shared understandings and directions are developed through the use of effective partnerships.

Principles and Behaviour Plan

All issues that cause harm in our school communities will always be addressed. These include but are not limited to:

  • Physical violence
  • Verbal abuse
  • Bullying and/or harassment
  • Unsafe behaviour

It is our belief that these issues cause harm and restorative processes will be implemented to repair the harm and rebuild relationships.

Implicit within this document is that teachers have a responsibility for strengthening relationships in the school community; assisting students to resolve their difficulties; repairing relationships between students, with themselves and for reintegration/re-entry into the classroom. Parents/carers are partners in this process and will be informed of any pattern of behaviour that causes a concern within the school and will be involved in processes to address this. Follow through is extremely important.
