Calwell High School External Validation - 2006

Introduction

Since the early nineties, government schools in the ACT have undertaken a review of operations in compliance with the Education Act applicable at that time. The ACT Education Act 2004, Section 24 continues to require the review of the operations of government schools at least every five years.

The School Improvement Framework calls for schools to set challenging standards and goals and document the growth toward their achievement. To evaluate the school’s process of self assessment of performance, the School Improvement Framework included the establishment of a rigorous, normative protocol for external validation of each school every three years.

The self assessment of performance in all aspects of schooling and the external validation process are intended to help the school determine and gauge its progress toward meeting departmental goals, assessing the quality of its programs, its staff, curriculum, students and administration, and assessing the school’s performance and its contribution to the advancement of the Department’s overall mission.

School Context

Preamble

Calwell High School is located in Southern Tuggeranong. It provides an inclusive educational program for students.  The Calwell High School Community is drawn from the suburbs of Calwell, Theodore, Isabella Plains and Richardson. The school is increasingly drawing students from other suburbs, though the majority of students live in the school’s Priority Enrolment Area (PEA). The school opened in 1990 and has grown in reputation over the years.

The school places a strong emphasis on providing the best education for all students across all key learning areas. Calwell High has a Community Centre where a wide range of partnerships have been developed between community groups, volunteers and government agencies to provide services and programs to students, parents and the wider community.

The school works very closely with PEA (Priority Enrolment Area) primary schools in the Calwell Cluster. The cluster has undertaken extensive PD for staff in Restorative Practices, use of Circle Time and developing and implementing a K to 12 Values Curriculum. The school places a strong emphasis on restorative practices, peer mentoring and mediation. The school has developed strong links with the other public high schools in the Tuggeranong Valley forming the Consortium of Tuggeranong High Schools.
