Teenager thinking is generally focussed on self. At Calwell High School, we aim to engage our students to reflect on wider societal issues and particularly those that affect them at local level. Youth InterACT is the ACT Government's Youth Participation Initiative. This website is for all young people in Canberra aged 12 - 25. It's Their Place, Their Space, encourage your student to take part and have their say about youth issues. There are hot topics, scholarships, multimedia, and Minister’s Youth Council invitation. Calwell High School- Knitting our way to Alice Springs Beanie Fest

The Program

A group of retired, volunteer teachers, counsellors and nurses meet informally at Calwell High School on Friday afternoons to knit mentor and talk with Year 9 students.

The Knitting Closer Ties Program (KCTP) was the brainchild of Lynne Johnson, a retired counsellor from the school. She organised for a group of volunteers to come to the school on Friday afternoons and knit with the students. The knitting creates relaxed conversation, which, in turn, enables informal counselling.

BeanieFest website

Schools as Communities Strategic Projects Grants initially funded the KCTP.

Students in this program have recently returned from a trip to the Alice Springs Beanie Festival, a festival that has been running now for a number a years.
